There seems to be a profound lack of mech games on the market today. I know MechWarrior 5 is coming out soon, but I never really got into the MechWarrior series (as far as I know, there's no online deathmatch kind of stuff).
I picked up a copy of Armored Core: For Answer a year ago, but that game is just ridiculously over-complicated. Each part has a ridiculous number of stats that the game makes no effort to tell you how to read, leaves out telling you key piloting techniques, and has so many parts that have to be memorized, and you have to learn which parts go with which. This, coupled with the fact that the game was released so long ago, means that I'm RIDICULOUSLY behind anyone and everyone who I play against online.
What I really want is a Chromehounds 2. When is something like that going to come out? Why are all the mech games just disappearing in favor of crap like Modern Warfare 2?

Be grateful that they didn't turn into Mechanical Warfare 2.

As for when it's coming out, I can't say. I haven't seen a single one that's willing to pop up on my radar.

I agree, we need more Mech Games. They're releasing (just released?) another port of an old Virtual On game, but I never really got into those. The genre is still popular in Japan, with loads of Gundam games and such, but again that's something I never got into. My favorite Japanese-style mech game was always Zone of the Enders (the last good thing Kojima did).

Armored Core: For Answer is not ridiculously complicated at all, but maybe I'm biased since I've destroyed the single player on multiple occasions.

Zone of the Enders 1+2 for the PS2 are high speed mech action with little to no "complications". They're also some of the best mech games in existence and probably my favourite series ever.

I know, and from now on you should call them BSR games!!! Big Stompy Robots!!

I thought AC4Awnser was alright, But I've been playing AC from the first one (I've finished about 7-8 of them now) So I guess the stats and tatics are 2nd nature (even though they did a major overhaul in no.4) and yes, playing online isn't easy >.<

Look up a game called Steel Battalion, NOW THERE IS A MECHA GAME! ok I never got to play it, but god damn they should make a sequel on the 360 so I can play it!!

If your looking for a good tactical RPG mecha game look into the frontmission series! it is really good!

But yes, WE NEED MORE MECHA GAMES!!!

I only have a 360 :(

I never could do anything in ACFA because
1: I have no idea how to build good mechs, because the game doesn't tell you ANYTHING WHATSOEVER, and there doesn't appear to be any real formula for it. I ask people what boosters I should use, and they tell me a certain combination that could work. It does, and I ask them why it works, and they can never give me a straight answer.
2: I can't second stage QBing, which means I'm always going to be a lot slower than everyone else.
3: There are a lot of missions on hard that I just CAN'T S-rank for some reason.

There's meant to be Armored Core 5 in the works, but also without release date last I heard.

And I'm still hoping Mechwarrior 5 decides to admit that Mechwarrior 4 was only pretending to be part of the Battleteh universe.

I know Mechwarrior 2 had really good online multiplayer. I played Mechwarrior 3 online as well, and it was pretty awesome too. Couldn't build suicide Mechs as a viable tactic any more though...

Mechwarrior 4, as I've already said, doesn't exist. But a game that claimed to be Mechwarrior 4 came out and had multiplayer. Wasn't a bad game if you get over its pretense at being part of an existing storyline it was ripping off.

Mechwarrior games were much slower paced than Armored Core, but also more accessible, with most things clearly labeled and explained in-game, and the few that weren't either intuitive anyway or covered in the manuals.

Not really into RPG stuff (at least with mechs. I play guild wars, and that sates my RPG thirst.)

Anyway, yeah, ACFA was my first mech game, and I fell in love with it, until I went online and realized I had no idea what I was doing. I can't understand any of the stats, I have no strategy, and I have no idea what parts and weapons go together.

If you looked into the official AC forums when the game was new, people there were struggling to work out what a lot of the stats meant - particularly the ones revolving around PA - which is new to the series in AC4 and ACFA.

Important balance between power drain and output? If you're using 1.15 regulations (Infinite EN) then the Virtue/Aaliyah boosters are the best you can get.

Some require practise, others require completely different setups, even counterintuitive ones.

My medium Aaliyah blade mech can S-Rank Occupation of Arteria Carpals on hard mode. A light mech which should have more maneuverability consistently gets shot down before it can take down the last 1-3.

I hear machine guns (Motorcobra's especially) are good for online play. A lot of weapons are useless due to collective lag, meaning it's impossible to hit people with them.

A gundam fighting game should be made with the set up of Mortal Kombat and has the customization of characters of COD 4.

There's been a load of Gundam games, include fighting games.

Most of them never see the outside of Japan though.

Please elaborate on the weapons and the balance between power drain and output. (reg 1.40)

Yes there is, pretty much every game has supported multiplayer including deathmatch and team-deathmatch modes among other multiplayer modes.

The Mechwarrior series is by far my favorite 'mech' games. I love the steady pace of the action and the sim-style gameplay where you're managing various systems like the temperature & coolant, your ammunition supplies, range, terrain, speed, etc. It feels powerful, like the evolution of the tank, so that when you're slowly advancing in a 100 ton Atlas mech bristling with PPC and Gause Rifle you just get this sense of being a slow moving death-machine. An avatar of War created to wreak havok!

It's also been a fantastic time to be a Mechwarrior fan recently too. Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries was recently released for free, plus there's Assault Tech, a game designed from the ground up by dedicated fans to be the spiritual successor to the original Mechwarrior 2.

Then there's also Mechwarrior: Living Legends, my favorite multiplayer game of the batch so far even though it's only in beta. It's a full conversion of Crysis, which means it has fantastic visuals, but they've also gotten the mech controls and gameplay down nearly perfect with only a few niggling issues remaining. Addictive multiplayer ahoy!

Plus there's Mechwarrior 5 on the horizon, although it's got stiff competition right now and one helluva legacy to live up to! Here's hoping it turns out well!

I got it and I fucking love it, true its hard to figure out how to work it at first but you learn.

Thats From Studio's, they also made Chromehounds, they make all these bars meant to represent different things which get annoying when one is terribly low and they offer no explanation not even in the user manual.

IIRC, what happened was that From Studios and From Software tried to split off from Sega, when they did Sega kept the graphics engine for Chrome Hounds so From couldn't make a game, then Ubisoft bought the rights to it so it may never happen until one day Mecha becomes popular again and Sega, probably defunt at that point from releasing too many shitty sonic games, gives the engine to From Studio's and presto Chromehounds 2.

i admit all this stuff about chrome 2 brings warm feelings. If only the damn thing had some real server support- like continuing new parts, changing the economy so cash isnt just for acheivement whoring, and maybe ensuring some types don't get overused ( i loved how it was SUPPOSED to work, but as soon as someone realized artillery could be used up close that went to shit, as well as some cheesy exploits of mech building mechanics.)
