I'll probably get flamed for this but for me it's The Shawshank Redemption, never understand why people consider it as such a classic movie. I mean Visually it was exceptionally well done but the story was so fucking cheesy at parts and the characters didn't feel real or believable to me at all.

I partially agree. I'd personally say that most modern American artists on mainstream radio are vastly overrated.

As for me, I find Neon Genesis Evangelion to be pretty overrated. The characters were good, but holy shit did the plot take a nosedive when it started getting deeper into the religious symbolism stuff.

My thoughts too. I see the show has clever references to adult media and it is competently written. While cute it is still just a show for 5 year old girls and the fact that so many adults gush over it (doesn't help that many said fans shove the show down everyone's throat) can get annoying.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is another thing that i didn't like, but for me the reason was different. The show is a deconstruction of the Super Robot sub-genre of Mecha anime, and it does a good job about it...But because of the advice of some friends it was one of the first anime that i watched besides the really mainstream ones. So, i never watched a Super Robot show before, the deconstruction didn't work with me, and after episode 16 the original anime is a trainwreck. So yeah, i didn't enjoy my time.

The word itself implies (or is generally used in a way that implies) that the people who like something are not smart enough to realize what they like is actually bad. And that type of mentality kinda pisses me off.

Interesting. I think 'overrated' implies that the majority opinion or critical consensus isn't always 'right'(though taste is subjective obviously).
There you have it. 'Overrated' means fans who rate something highly are wrong for doing so, which makes no sense since taste is subjective.

And typically it seems to get used as a shorthand for saying 'You people are dumb for liking this, seriously'.

I'm with Casual Shinji on this. The term, to me at least, always seem to suggest that everyone is wrong for praising the things they like, and I don't like that type of thinking. There are stuff you like that most people don't, and then there's vise versa. I prefer thinking like that rather than using terms like "Overrated" and "Underrated"

In which case...

Elfen Lied- Considered a classic by most, bu I don't think it's very good. I don't think the idea is well executed, and outside of two characters, I found the rest either bland, useless, underused, or annoying. Then there's also the ending, which aggravates me. I've read the manga, too, which is a bit better than the anime, but still has its share of problems, as well as ann ending that kinda pissed me off. However, a lot of people are emotionally touched by it and do see the deeper meanings, and that's fine. I used to love it in high school, so I can see why others would.

Mawaru Penguindrum- This one isn't as widely seen, but most people I see who watched it end up loving it. I absolutely hated it, and I feel like I'm in an incredibly small minority. I couldn't stand the style or the characters, every line of dialogue was the same pseudo-philosophical drivel that you see in most every anime, coming out of every character (even kids), there was a flashback every few minutes, and it was clear that it was more concerned with symbolism and philosophical messages than it was telling a story, as thinking about the anime story-wise it makes no sense. I thought it was pretentious garbage, and this is coming from an Evangelion fan, and I'm not kidding when I say it's one of the worst anime I've sat through. It's well-made, and original, but it pissed me off more than most other bad anime.

I don't know. I typically enjoy the media that I ingest. If I'm not sure that I'll like it, I probably am not even going to start watching it in the first place. Like, I could say that the Big Bang Theory is overrated, as a lot of people seem to watch it, but I've never seen it aside from a few clips, so I can't really make an educated opinion on that. I've never sat down to see an episode because I know that I won't like it, but that doesn't make it overrated.

The closest I can even get to calling something overrated is that I think FF7 is slightly overhyped by FF fans, but it's not like it's a bad game still. I actually think it's a really, really good game. Not a messiah like some people think, but still a pretty damn good game.

So, I don't know. There's a problem with claiming your opinion is better than someone else's.

Breaking Bad and Mad Men for me.

I watched a few episodes for each and I just couldn't. I really tried to like them, but I found them both boring.

Other than that, I really can't think of anything else since I don't tend to pay much attention to things I really don't care for.

Easy: Cee-Lo Green's "F**k You".

According to everyone, it's the best bit of pop music of the decade.

It's a boring little piece piano-driven cheese with a dash of bitterness. I get that it resonates with people lyrically, but seriously, screw lyrics. All they do is get in the way of the actual music, the stuff I care about.
I see you driving round town with the girl I love and I wish you all the best and hope you treat her right. It wouldve never worked out anyway and I hope can find someone else and form a relationship that may actually last. But fuck you anyway

I think pharrell williams is over rated. Happy is a good song. Its catchy and upbeat (basic requirements for a pop song) and it puts a smile on my face. But boy is it over played
Yes, but have you seen the parody for it?

Much much better than the actual song. :D

star wars.

Not a single one of the films has ever really evoked a sense of genuine interest in me. Go ahead and comment on this all you want, I've yet been able to watch any of the films all the way through, but I don't find any of the mythos or recycled themes really worth having to consume hours and hours of media from a monster of a franchise with artistic high points that can be described as lackluster in their aesthetic merit at beast.
I think Star Wars is sort of like Shakespeare or the Beatles. The original trilogy did a ton of innovative technical things and had some engaging characters and plot moments, but has been emulated sooooo many times that it stops being seen as original or innovative. I've heard the standard, "Shakespeare just wrote in cliches, why's he so great?" line in person from a classmate back in high school, and I've felt the same way about the Beatles. I can respect the innovation, but not everyone finds the material that interesting.

OT: I have a hard time with Led Zeppelin. I do enjoy a number of their songs, but I just kinda feel meh about them in a broad sense. Also, a host of films, like Citizen Kane or pretty much any other Oscar winner that didn't actually do very well in theaters, tend to make me just shrug. They're not necessarily bad, but I don't really get the appeal sometimes.
It's funny should mention that, because my sister (a music major) and I were discussing this same theme in regards to music this morning. She asked me if I enjoyed the rolling stones and I said something along the lines of "well, they're required listening". There are a ton of creative works which have been derived from their respective cultural histories: Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones both used musical techniques derivative of early black american music.

So we did come to the conclusion that the process of evaluation the aesthetic value of a creative work changes with time. Some people might not be moved by Shakespeare's stories because their individual literary components have become canonical tropes in western culture.

I really do want to give the star wars series another honest go, but I can't bring myself to it quite yet. lol.
Star Wars is best if you skip the prequel trilogy and go with the originals first. However, if you can suffer through the first three episodes, the second half will seem immensely better by comparison. However, the CGI Clone Wars series, which takes place between episodes 2&3 is available on Netflix and makes a lot of the characters in those movies faaaaaar more interesting, so there's that to consider. Also, now that Disney/Lucasfilm has dispensed with all the EU besides that series and the films, those are all good to watch for the newest ones.

Pokemon Gen 1
Came here to say that, but when I refer to gen 1 being overrated, I usually refer to the games themselves. By today's standards, the gen 1 games are horrible, yet people seem to look upon them with so much love. Just play the GBA remakes and you'll never want to touch the old ones ever again.

I would say the monsters themselves are also overrated. I love a lot of them too as I grew up with them, but I just wish that people weren't so afraid to acknowledge other Pokemon. Fan artists or anyone doing something artistic with Pokemon in particular have trouble dealing with anything not found in the gen 1 Pokedex, it's a bit irritating for someone like me and others who has so many favorites outside the first gen Pokemon.

OT: Also zombies, can please either bring an old monster back for a modern age, or make brand new ones? Please? Zombie fiction feels all the same, all everyone can come up with is "the humans are the true monsters!" Not a bad thing necessarily, but just like zombies, it just won't die!

Have to agree with @DerpLordSnuggy, I just can't get into Game of Thrones. Can't stand it, and I also continue to be confused as to why some call it "fantasy" just because it's medieval and has dragons. That's not enough to make it fantasy. Really the only thing I enjoyed was Peter Dinklage's performance, but there's just not enough of it for me to want to go out of my way to watch the show.
What would it have to do to qualify as "fantasy" for you?

OT: GTA 4

I despised GTA 4. If found the story uninteresting, the mechanics annoying and the controls unusable. I got fed up when trying to shoot Russians in an abandoned building site turned into a long, laggy, poorly paced and awkward to control head shooting gallery. Also the vehicles all handled like they had constantly flat tires and an elephant under the bonnet, and I couldn't even change the colour.

This is amazing you have made my day. Weird al is still the undisputed champ of parodies. The line about printing a resume in comic sans had me in stitches.

@Flames66 (sorry, quote button still not working), what I would consider fantasy is something which really feels otherworldly, that it's just so different from what we know and are used to that it can at times almost defy comprehension.

This is what fantasy once was as a genre, not a genre per-say but anything which could give that feeling of being a truly "other" place. This was actually once the norm until Tolkien had to go and make one of the greatest trilogies of all time. Now the middle ages with a few magical things here and there are the "standard" fantasy, despite the fact that it was and is a genre which by definition has no standard setting. Having War of the Roses with a few dragons and undead sprinkled in (and very lightly sprinkled at that) does not make a fantasy setting or story, it makes a medieval story set in a fictional world with a few fantastic elements.

I will probably get killed, but...Dark Souls. Maybe because i'm from the end of the NES, beginning of the SNES Era, but i'm used to hard games, so in that front it didn't impress me, i did like the gameplay, but found the combat way too slow, i guess they were trying to go the methodical road, but it just didn't click with me. The menus and inventory were horrible to navigate, and since i played on the PC, the port did not help. Maybe i just had a bad experience because of the bad port, or after all the hype i was expecting to cry tears of blood from the difficulty.

But anyway, for me it is a game that i find overrated, but at the same time i can understand why so many people enjoy it.
How did you get that to work? I really want to try the game, it just crashes when i start a new game
