If medical research halted, the diseases would evolve and all the current methods we have would be absolutely obsolete; it'd be like we did none at all.

It's one of those 'do it properly or don't do it at all' methods and, to be totally blunt, if we, in the high-flying future, all died as a result of something stupid like bird-flu then who would be there to give support to some third-world countries? Yes, I know, charities make a very mild dent in the whole problem, but that little dent is still countless people's lives.

No, if medical research halted we'd all just be shot down by the next plague that swept past. Mother Nature's had it out for us for a while now, methinks.

So you think we should let people die because it is hard to save them?

What would the money be spent on? What better use is there for it than saving lives?

...we can put it towards building my Secret Underground Base. Bwahahaha.

Edit: and on topic, Organic Chemists find the molecular complexity of biologically active molecules too interesting to just stop trying to synthesise them.

So you're arguing for prevention rather than cure? I think both are necessary especially with the evolution of diseases as RAK mentioned.

Well, if it was natural cancer, that's one thing.

But there is a portion of cancer that people die from is caused by something humans do. Sometimes, its not intentional, either.

If we can cure those types of cancers, and some of the unfortunate genetic ones (such as Leukemia), that's good. There isn't something programmed in humanity to trigger those kinds if we grow too quickly.

I agree we should be investing money on clean water solutions and other good science, but stopping medical research won't free up any money for good causes. That money has to be freed up from wasteful spending, first.

I see what you're saying dude. All condolences and/or encouragment to all those you've lost/ those in your life who are fighting. But advancement needs to continue because the diseases are going to continue advancing too.
All scientific research must continue, for the good of (and pure economics, even going moreso than what was said before, as you can work longer, you don't break down as easy (we can rebuilt him, we have the technology :3) means contributing to the economy longer. Think about it, and furthermore, just on a purely humanistic spiel, would you want people to live longer and have a better quality of life in general? Science is making that happen.

I would have to agree, and make an amendment: Diseases are evolving and mutating all the time, from one of these could come something else (accidental discoveries have been abundant in all kinds of research. At least a few that I know of (but can't think of them at the moment) vaccines have.

And as for improving the quality of life, I wanna just plug a scientist who I don't know how many people have heard of, I mean agriculture isn't quantum physics (in the level of interest in the general population and such) His name is Norman Borlaug
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIvNopv9Pa8 <- Taken from 1/3 or so of a Penn and Teller episode called "Eat This!" which is all about food: Diets, weight loss, and GM (genetically modified) or GE (genetically engineered) food, how it's helping feed starving people. With no further ado *clicks*

ok that's incredibly short sighted because without medical research we would have been wiped out as a species already

yes there would be people who were immune to one disease but not to the ones that come after the big one that wiped out most of the people, there is also the fallout of mass extinction or darwin's law coming to fruition, aka stupid people dying in stupid ways
