With the passage of time, the usage of medieval shields has undergone a paradigm shift. Nowadays, these shields are often used as an attractive house decorative item. The time has gone when people preferred to decorate their houses with portraits and photos. Nowadays, in order to add a refreshing and appealing look to their house, people prefer to add these shields on their house walls. One can decorate his house from the below mentioned, different kinds of shields

May I be the first to say, welcome to The Escapist. I wish you a long and prosperous life here.

Anyway, back on topic, I've always liked the idea of a shield on the wall. I've kind of always had a fascination with medieval weapons and armor. But the shield on the wall, in my opinion, adds a nice touch if placed well.

Actually the coolest thing would be a medieval shield with your family crest on it.

Actually, those shields weren't much different than portraits because they usually had the family crests painted on them.

NOW they may be pure decoration becase most people don't have a family crest, but then again, I don't know anybody who actually has a shield for decoration.

Shields haven't gone through a complete paradigm shift, they've just evolved in design and construction.

They are still very much used by the Police and Army, in riots and other situations in which 'infantry' needs to be protected from low velocity missiles and small arms fire.

I would argue that throughout the world, there are still more shields in use (by all the Police, Army and similar forces in the world) than on people's walls, not medieval ones though.

It is quite funny that despite all our modern technology, in a riot the Police still mainly use medieval tactics, i.e. foot infantry and shield walls, with mounted cavalry support.
