I don't see this Meebo thing and I think I've figured out why. I'm using Safari, on a Mac running Snow Leopard, which doesn't seem to matter. What matter is I'm a Pub Club member, so apparently whatever this thing is, it's for non-paying members. I wonder if this pops up for non-member (by which I mean people who don't have an account on this site). If this is a matter of advertising, this is very annoying because for advertising you should not put an annoying service on your site, especially if it's only affecting certain people. (I joined the pub club for the high def AND to get rid of in video ads. I see far too many of those as is). Any other Pub Club members confirm/deny my suspicions?
Its for ads so you guys will not see them.

Problem with Meebo is that it takes ageeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees to load it, cheaked my networking and took from 4-15 sec to load it with 800ms to 4000ms and was even worse during the day.
And its very annoying (example I like to highlight what Im reading, but then it a little box comes up: Do you want to share it with Meebo?)

This explains why I can't highlight and delete a line of text with my mouse. Instead I've been using Shift+arrow keys :p

Oh thank god, I thought I had caught some kind of computer virus or something...

But really Escapist? I'm fine with the ads we have now, I know you need them to pay the bills around here but this is just slowing my computer down alot and it's very annoying. D:

I'd -like- to be able to turn it off, but if it's going to be a similar situation as with the site ads, I guess I can just ignore it, as long as it's not a risk for infection or spyware.
Which reminds me, does this look like it carries the risk of infection or spyware to you?

Or this?

Because, well...

Meebo is the reason for all this crap that has been happening to me on the Escapist! Ah, it suddenly makes sense now, thats what the weird thing is that comes up every time I select text, that is why the Escapist takes so long to load any page, that is why my internet browser has failed to upload the page several times and completely crashed TWICE today.

Something has definately screwed it up lately, I move my mouse anywhere near a youtube link and all it wants to do is share it with Meebo. I can say this much I will NEVER use Meebo if its this invasive.
A million times yes. There was an interesting article about a new tank defence system I read, with a youtube video attached, it took me about 5 minutes to actually view the video because whenever I moved my mouse over it the "Share" button obscures the play button. Why would I share it if you won't let me view it myself? I understand the Escapist needs ads to gain revenue, but this is too far, way too far.

Seriously, I feel like finding the people that coded this Meebo crap and pummeling them to death with their own motherboards.

Crappy addon is crappy. Regardless I'm using chrome and it seems to hide itself well enough. My only complaint is that it definitely has been causing the site to load much slower than usual, though that could be attributed to the E3 traffic.

You might want to remove your post. I won't report you because I freakin hate this meebo thing, however if the mods catch you telling people how to block their ads, you WILL be banned. There will be no passing Go. There will be no collecting 200 Live points, you will go straight to Ban.

And I'm with you on that. However, I have my greivances with the moderation team here as to a lot of other users, and we'd all prefer not to give them ANYTHING. We're just trying to look out for the other users.

The ads around the videos I could cope with. The ads interupting the videos I could (barely) tolerate. This Meebo thing? This shit is annoying. I want an option to turn this off entirely, not just lower it.

So, I would like to repeat the above quote: Classy, Escapist, reeeaaaaal classy.
Even god damn Youtube adverts are better than this set up, because at least you're allowed to skip them at times.
This has no reason for being here, the Escapist already has ads around pages and ads that interrupt videos that we're FORCED to watch, you'd think that would be enough, wouldn't you?

I can appreciate that they need the ad revenue to support the site, but forcing a toolbar to plug further adverts that's even flicking up alarms on Nod32 is problematic. This really is unacceptable.

I have to ask, what's more likely? That people will pay for pub club memberships to get away from all the adverts, or that they'll just leave the site entirely? Somehow I really don't think it'll be the former.

Or they'll choose the other, unspeakable option. I imagine each time they have an advertising gaffe a fair amount of people do one of the three. And it probably leans in favor of the behaviors they don't want.

I wonder what other pointless thing they'll add to the site next. This is starting to get really annoying.

This is precisely the kind of crap people spend ages trying to get *off* their computers and browsers, effing smart bars and search bars and hot search and tool bars that get installed arbitratily whenever you're not sharp enough to untick a box thats on by default. And now it's being forced into websites, under a guise of a 'social networking' widget. I don't give a flying crap if I'm being over dramatic, but if this is the shape of things to come, browsing is bound to get much more painful.

Going by internet standards of terrible things you can do to make a site less customer friendly, they could either add an automatically playing music widget that plays "My Neck, My Back" (Youtube it) on every page load, or switch the background to a flashing .gif.

Also the Escapist seems even slower than usual.
It's a Wednesday though, Wednesdays are always extra laggy because of ZP.
Yeah but if you cheak your network logs you will see that (for me at least) Meebo takes around 3-6 seconds to load while everything else takes 10-100ms.

Im also getting warnings that unsafe javascript attemts to acces frame with url meebo.com
I'm also getting that 'unsafe javascript' thing with the Meebo crap. Norton has also been finding a load of unsafe cookies associated with this website lately. Tracker ones mostly.

Really, I'm hating all the pop-up windows lately. Meebo just antagonizes me beyond my normal limit. The other ones, like those DeadSpace pop-up windows, are just in the way; the same way that the old 'drop down' banner ads of forgotten yore use to cover links.

Since these ads normally go on a week or two, I'll simply take a break from Escapist during this time and hope they're gone by the time I get back.

I'd like to see that damn Facebook plugin gone as well. Just 'cause I use facebook doesn't mean I want the bloody thing following me everywhere like some kind of creepy stalker.

Thank you so much for making this a nice place to visit, Escapist team. [/sarcasm]
