Also take a look at Flashback.
Quote for Truth. Do take a look at Flashback, which can best be described along the lines of "Prince of Persia meets Bladerunner"
Indeed. It's also awesome and reasonably difficult.

Sword of Vermillion

An RPG, probably terrible now but I thought it was top when I was about 10.

Phantasy star 2, the game so hard, aggravating and difficult it shipped with a strategy guide,

Shadow run, it's been a while since I have played it so I'm not sure it there's actual depth or just kind of a proto-sandbox game

Actually, Philios, it holds up surprisingly well (I've been playing it on GameTap). A solid, lengthy action-RPG. The only frustration is the terrible overworld movement interface, though as I recall that irritated me back then, too.

Spakkenkhrist, for depth you really can't go wrong with Phantasy Star II and Shining Force. If you've got a Sega CD attached to that Genesis of yours, I'd also recommend Lunar: The Silver Star. One of my all time favorites.

Kid Chameleon, I'm not convinced that game even ends! Good fun and quite challenging, unless you use a game genie...

Yeah that was my favourite game for a while.

Tenmar: I'm after depth of gameplay rather than plot.

please name me some modern games with depth because i rlly cnt think of many... halo, smash bros...in terms of commercial games. Most tend to consist of button mashing or pointing and clicking with some next gen graphics to cover it up.
Weeeelll...

Mass Effect
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Oblivion
Bioshock
Forza Motorsport 2
Viva Pinata

There's several more, but if you can't find any depth in today's games you're just looking in the wrong places.

I remember that too. I believe it was after you'd fought the cat on the tower of death and on a lift. I played that on an emulator with save games and still couldn't beat it :(
Yeah, I had that game on the Mega Drive and on an emulator, but I eventually gave up on it. Still an amazing game though. Just be prepared to die slightly inside at certain sections.

I know some of these have already been said, but these are my favorite Genesis games:

Aladdin
Comix Zone
Earthworm Jim 1 + 2
Gunstar Heroes
Mean Bean Machine
Rock N' Roll Racing
Shining Force 1 + 2
Shinobi series
Sonic series
Streets of Rage II
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Vectorman 1 + 2
Zombies Ate My Neighbors

A long list, I know, but pretty comprehensive I think.

Damn I forgot Comix Zone! Thats probably the best beat em up ever made. Really harsh at times, but way better than Streets Of Rage 2.

Man, Gunstar Heroes is simply amazing, even though you go around shooting stuff all the time its very addictive. Also Toejam and Earl, as well Shining Force and Streets of Rage are all awesome games.
