Except copyright infringement is only one reason for the site being shut down and the founders being arrested. The article lists the other two reasons as money laundering and racketeering, so I'd wait and observe a bit before making any accusations about what this means.
That's a good point. I'm not the most informed about matters such as these anyway. I'm not even sure what racketeering is. [small]It's got something to do with money or some shit...[/small]

I don't want that to happen, but right now the government is really testing just how deep the apathy runs. The question now is, will they stop before the people snap, and we really do wind up with rioting and/or a civil war? It's not exactly a pleasant thought.
Likewise but considering their latest antics I don't see them stopping till we actually have a full blown riot on their hands. I'm with Owyn on this, I really don't want this to happen but the more I think about it those bullies in congress won't listen to reason and unless another more heavy "Blackout" happens and makes them back down who know's what we might do.

I was about to make a thread about this myself, cos this is fucking bad, the article I read explained how Kim Dotcom (Head of Megaupload, yes thats his name) was legally safe and that the site was totally legal. I guess the feds give less than a single shit about legality. I guess SOPA doesn't even need to pass for the internet to be fucked.

Ah, fuck 'one day'. I'm game for right now.

Anyone with me? A little ride down to DC on a cold winter's day to announce that the internet has seceded from the union? I'd like to see the look on their faces for that one.

I dare say it's only a matter of time until youtube is next. Who likes freedom? Too bad. The American government is going to take it away, because frankly, the entertainment industry pays more in their pockets than you do.
Not an American? Do you think they care? That makes you even worse. You are now a "foreign thieve".
Good job America. Give the rest of the world more reason to dislike you.

This presents an interesting development in regards to SOPA and PIPA: what on earth are they trying to pass these laws for if the power already exists to do these things?

Anyway, this is an atrocious move, and very worrying. And ultimately futile, I bet half a dozen identical sites have been set up in the time since Megaupload was taken down.

I am so happy to discover that Swizz Beatz is the CEO, however. Yay for players in the industry not working to preserve their own fortunes!

Unfortunately, that would get pretty much the same reaction as when Key West seceded from the union (nothing, they're not hostile and they actually still pay their taxes; they're the city state equivalent of that guy who declared himself the emporer of America in the late 19th century, and had actual correspondence with foreign royalty, but no power and no government interference.) No, they won't really consider it a "secession" unless it devolves into either actual violence, or hacking on the level of what Iran supposedly did to bring down that drone. DDOSing the DoJ, RIAA, and MPAA (all of which are down right now; check it) isn't anything but an annoyance. Again, I don't want this to happen, I'm just saying that all you're suggesting would bring is laughter, at least if it was as non violent as what you described -- which isn't such a bad thing.

Uhh, Owyn? THAT was a joke. You can't secede a non-physical territory. I was taking the piss out because politicians think that the internet is some kind of wild country you can police. Maybe I should've said something about maritime laws, since it's more like an ocean...

Point taken. It's hard to tell that sort of thing through text, though. I was just thinking of a bunch of nerds driving past capitol hill and shouting something about the internet seceding from the union, which is a pretty entertaining thought. Unfortunately, there's enough legitimate crazies out there shouting stuff to begin with that I don't think it would be noticed. (Like, think schizophrenics. The first time I every saw a crazy person standing on a street corner and shouting random things was in DC. I now see them every time I go past the library at my university, but that's another story...)

Good grief, they make it sound like a Mexican drug cartel or an international prostitution ring.

No no no, I would never do it like THAT. I'm a sophisticated cynic. I would enter in an official capacity with a nice suit on, surrounded by other people in suits to say something more along the lines of...

"Sir, we have found one or more of your policies regarding the treatment of the World Wide Web - further to be referred to as simply "The Internet" - to be unsatisfactory and unacceptable by the common man, nay the net-using enthusiast. We therefore state that you are unfit to govern these electronic territories and do solemnly remove it from your jurisdiction and the union in general. The Internet is not the United States and it never has been. It is also not any country, nor the property of said countries. This is a world unto itself, a world you have not demonstrated the proper understanding or care to handle, so we do remove your responsibility. This is effective-immediately and a good day to you all. Ta-ta!"

...and then run for the nearest exit before they recover.

Racketeering is essentially committing crimes in an organized fashion. So if as part of your business you also engage in illegal activities over an extended period, you will be charged with racketeering.

In this case they seem to be charges associated with the copyright infringement. Without the crime of copyright infringement as part of a business the racketeering and money laundering charges would not apply.

One also has to note that the charges specify that the site was engaging in sponsoring infringement rather than just passively allowing it to happen. The accusation seems to be that the owners paid people to post pirated material so it would drive more traffic to the site. If proven that would be a very different thing then what Pirate Bay is accused of.

some us have...but you can't just take up arms against your own government...the average citizen of this country would not last ten seconds against the trained men who protect those we would fight.
