Beaten to it by someone who doesn't even use the Escapist. twat.

OT: That's the dumbest move I have seen to date. So many people are going to get a major fuckover for that, especially modders for games since about 90% of the mods for various games are all hosted on MU.

There is this thing called timing, and America is the epileptic redheaded stepchild of it.

Maybe 2012 isn't the 'end' of the world, but the beginning of a great change.

The elected representatives of the US don't serve the interests of the people who voted them into power. They serve the corporations, somethings going to give soon, revolution will hopefully ensue to overthrow this..... un-serving government.

Shutting down the entirity of a massive and mostly legal site just because there are some Pirates using it?

That's almost as stupid as going to war with a whole country because there are some terrorists in it.

Dont watch the news much I take it, USA has done that quite often. Also its odd that they did that since its not even a server thats located in the USA. Hell the guy behind that site is in another country. Land of the Lawsuits.

Hole lee christ.

I cant even process this. I have a megaupload lifetime account that I JUST uploaded the contents of my PC to over the course of the last 2 months (roughly half a TB of data files for various media projects I have been working on) for the express purpose of reformatting my PC and having online storage capacity.

I reformatted the PC last night. I decided to go to bed after the reformatting was done and I decided to go to bed and start the downloading process today....

That is literally hundreds of thousands of hours of my personal work most of which dont have physical backups that is currently under siege because of this and insanely perfect timing.

So the plan is to say "Hey, were going to put SOPA on the back burner so we can just go ahead and do this shit anyway, because the civil discourse is getting in the way of what our corporate overlords are commanding us to do."

WTF! Seriously, WTF.

One day US citiziens will have enough of shit like this and a Civil war could happen.
Ah, fuck 'one day'. I'm game for right now.

Anyone with me? A little ride down to DC on a cold winter's day to announce that the internet has seceded from the union? I'd like to see the look on their faces for that one.
Not to get off topic, but doesn't this all feel kinda ominous? US govt clampdowns on the bill of rights, global financial recession (bordering on depression), Iran and Israel sizing up for a war, less so with India and Pakistan, political unrest in Russia, and social unrest all over? Its sorta like something big is about to go off, and this is the pressure before the cork pops.
I would'nt be surprised if the US is where the dominos start to fall

Well not to go too too conspiracy theory on this one but... did it occur to anyone that the ability to shut down any website under the accusation of piracy was really just a method to stop people from assembling online to conduct protests and the exchange of ideas online? Because we've more or less lost that Constitutional right (you need a permit to gather in person, permits are granted by the entities you are likely to be protesting, reasons for denying a permit need not be given - in a disturbing majority of this country at present)?

Controlling the media isn't enough anymore, we have the Internet, but that's just what they are working on getting a better handle on controlling right now. Take these articles and read them, compare them if you will - what the world sees verses what your average overworked not enough time to ferret out other sources of news on the Internet - even the basic BBC stuff - sees:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16642369

http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/19/business/megaupload-shutdown/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_cnn

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/01/19/feds-shut-down-file-sharing-website/

And yes, we all LOL at Fox News... but tragically many people do not.

Well, time to start packing my bags for Canada. No point in staying here any more.
Yea, Harper's government already censors the web and it's legal to spy on people, limit speech, and copy right laws are strict in Canada in their own right (it's a crime to be caught just transferring songs from your ipod to the computer for example if they're not regulated by an itunes type system). Harper and his conservative allies are already looking to the US as inspiration for further things they can implement that they haven't been able to do in the past.
