I'm not all that smart or deep or even very good at spelling, so my discussions wont be enlightening. It makes me sad, but it's reality.

I watch alot of TV and I've noticed myself dismissing alot of it as drivel, depressing, or enough of the same-y crap thatI can summurize in just enough time to change the chanel. I find myself sticking to the same channels, such as comedy central or cartoon network. I'm also not sure if it's my fault or not. The news is often one-sided and extremely tunnel visioned, only covering what is a major catastrophy or some AMERICAN hero. So it either makes me sad, or angry. USA normally has either rape or murder on its mind, the BBC has gotten outragiously stagnant. Speaking of the BBC If the doctor doesn't start going back to his roots, he's going to end up being a flat, bland, white stickman. Fix it. To top it all off, Discovery, History, and NatGeo just aren't anymore. Animal Planet is hardly about animals anymore, and more about humans who work around or are attacked by animals. ScyFy, with its stupid new name, is getting worse too. I remember watching it a while back and it had great new ideas, but now it seems like the Scyfy is run by the same evil grey-building bastards that are putting out the old movie remakes, sequals, and ad-fueled idiocy that have infected, well, everything else. I've had my friends forcing me to sit and watch It's Sunny, and guess what? It's dumb. Really dumb. And it's like it's everywhere. Has America really become so progressively stupid that our Comedy is now fart and sex jokes, our news shallow, our dramas bland, and our action not complete unless it has a minimum of three explosions and five car chases? Wait, I digress a little. Starz and Showtime has put out some good stuff. I love Dexter and did love Sparticus, but even on networks which has put out such interesting shows has stuff like Californication. Yay sex jokes. Thats not even a step forward and back. It's like walking in a circle on the peak of a hill.
And I know people are going to snap and troll me and whatever, but looking at our TV then looking at how it's influenced people around me, (And that's everywhere I go folks, from cities great an small.) I'm starting to see similarities to Idiocracy. I'm not saying You in particular, but if you do get angry at this, you do kind of help prove my point. I cant walk around without a Family Guy refference hitting me, or some such other stupid shit. Our media does affect us, so look around. Nut shots and puke are the most saught after searches on the internet, energy drinks are taking over the beverage industry, we're giving our teachers the shaft, corperations are more interested in money than people, anyone who disagree's with you is a heretic... Hell, even insults are no longer creative. You know what would be awesome. TV boycot. Refuse the media until it gives us what we need. Smarter programming, less intrusive selling, and creative thought. It's not hard. They had it all before, so they can get it all back.
On the other hand we might be to stupid to care. But stupid is as stupid does.

Notice: I forgot to spell check, put quotation marks on licenced names, Shift when I needed to, so this post should have a good hypocritical feel to it. It also was not on purpose, which probably does make my a hypocrit.

The sad thing is that stupid shows are popular because people enjoy watching other people be even more pathetic than they consider themselves to be. It's become so commonplace to feel crap about yourself and your life that instead of feeling it's possible to raise ourselves up it's far more practical to look down and be relieved that at least you're not that big of a waste of space.

Sad face.

I think this pretty much sums up my view on everybody who says 'idiocracy' without bathing in liquid irony first.

Liquid irony gets you cleaner. Not as much calcium in it as water. Hilarious though. Oh, and I didn't really touch on the "the stupids are breeding" topic, thats for another day. No, today is just about the dumbing down and recycling of media. Thanks though, cause without this clarification I think alot of people would feel,... well, like you just said. So, not a topic on breeding, topic on TV. That is all.

The "I'm not that smart" shit at the beginning of the OP's little rant strikes me as false modesty. A kind of dubious disclaimer intended to make someone who's stroking their ego not look like someone stroking their ego. Same as with their follow up. "Look how bad I am at grammar, see, I'm not being a pseudo intellectual douche".

It doesn't really change the fact that this whole thing is him just talking about how stupid the plebs are with their low brow entertainment as opposed to his more cultured fare. If there's one thing that really grinds my gears it's people using taste in entertainment as grounds for acting better than anyone else. It's the most grating thing one can do. A tad hypocritical when one considers that trying to put someone down because they have differing tastes in music or tv is the trademark of people who don't have a real accomplishment to lord over them.

When has the media not been dumbed down?

Way back when, the printing press was deplored as a tool of the devil because it opened the floodgates to a deluge of terrible novels based around the lesser doings of Round Table knights. They were so numerous that an author wrote a bestselling satire mocking how ridiculous they were. Thus we got Don Quixote.

None of this Idiocracy stuff is new. Corporations have been active for centuries; corporate greed derailed the entire fourth crusade. Anybody remember the Tulip Bulb bubble? Think of all the fairy tales and rumors that used to go around; they were no different the the urban legends we have today. I'm not saying warning about it is wrong, it's just far too late.
