Starcraft 1, C&C95, UT99, Quake 3, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 1, Homeworld, Supreme Commander 1, Total Annihilation, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Xcom: Enemy Unknown, MGS1, MGS3, Fable 1 and Tales of Vesperia are all I can think of at the moment.

Oblivion, Skyrim, SupCom and TA soundtracks were all done by Jeremy Soule.

The soundtrack for Journey was up for a Grammy

If that isn't proof of it's magnificence, I don't what is :D
Well I do agree it's good. Isn't that an appeal to authority?

Anyway. The soundtrack for PlantSide 2 Is pretty good. At least for the New Conglomerate.
When it's up against the likes of Hans Zimmer and John Williams?

Not really :D

The Nier soundtrack is truly incredible. Both as standalone music and as accompaniment to the game, it's damned near perfect. The best thing about the game, in my opinion.

Contrary to what many say, I think this generation has seen some absolutely stellar game music. Xenoblade Chronicles, Lost Odyssey, Darksiders, The Last of Us, hell even the new Counter-Strike has a pretty fucking badass title theme!

Hotline Miami's soundtrack is really awesome

Mount and Blade's Soundtrack is quite cool as well

I especially love the Napoleonic Wars DLC theme

and really love that DLC's selection of classical music as combat soundtrack

I like the first four Silent Hill soundtracks, with the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack being my personal favourite:

I can listen to this soundtrack from beginning to end and not get bored. It suits the game as well, it really builds the atmosphere.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Far Cry: Blood Dragon yet. I've been listening to the sound track since the game came out. The theme song is amazing. I get this music stuck in my head every time I play it

Totally gonna repost the BlazBlue soundtrack again. Best game soundtrack I have ever heard, it even surpasses Persona 4's awesome music. It has the best opening cinematic i've ever seen.

Check this shit out:

Fuckin' Hazama at the end. It's the climatic run at each other (that's got to have a trope name right?) thing and his top priority is to keep his hat on straight instead of keeping his hands anywhere near a battle ready stance. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!

It's criminal how Tsubaki is low, low tier. Seriously, she's a battle nun. BATTLE. NUN. If it wasn't for her Drive being an unreliable mess she would be so much better.

Astral Finish haterzzzzzzzzz.

Sure, we have the usual suspects like Pokemon, Jesper Kyd, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Journey, Shadow of The Colossus, and Dark Souls, we now have Touhou music. Touhou has some of the best themes that I've heard in gaming for a long time, despite the games being bullet hell shooters that can be knocked out in half an hour if you're good. =D

Kingdom Hearts (all the games, although that depends on your taste) have fantastic soundtracks.
Yoko Shimomura is indeed a Goddess when it comes to composing. She's also done all of the Mario and Luigi RPG series and she did Super Mario RPG's music too. ^.^

OT: Well someone already mentioned Yoko Shimomura, but I'd also like to through in the works of Soichi Terada who composed the Ape Escape games soundtracks, well except for 2's.
Then, say what you want about Sonic games, you have to at least admit that they usually have pretty good soundtracks. Even 06 had a good soundtrack...but that was about it. XD

Deadly Premonition.

a) Because it sounds a lot like Mario music.
b) Because it's simple.
c) Because it has the best soundtrack of any game I have ether played.

I second this notion. Blood Dragon had an absolutely fantastic soundtrack, one that I immediately bought not too long after playing the game.

A few games come to mind with regards to this:

There are other games with soundtracks on the same level as those. Most of the Zelda games have excellent soundtracks, and The Last Story was partially redeemed from its failures by how good the soundtrack was. Also, The Elder Scrolls series, especially Oblivion, has always been great. However, I really don't feel like looking up songs for all of those games as well.
