Buddhist exorcism? I didnt realise buddhists believed in demons.
I guess you've never seen any anime... ever.

Yet another case of religion making good people do bad things. Use it as incentive to stop being so accommodating of religious nonsense. If you think they've got it wrong, say so.

Exorcism is real, but it can be hard from distincting a demonic possession from mental illness sometimes. We are only human after all.
Uhm... real as in demons actually possessing people? No.. I believe people can actually believe they are possessed, but to think that you could actually be possessed by the devil or something like that is absurd.

Is the Escapist playing tricks on me? I only see 3 replies, and I'm sure I've made one already.

If that's the case, disregard this post; if not

1. Slams against religion.
2. Rebuttals for religion.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2.
4. Continuously repeat step 3.
5. Realize no one is going to change their opinion.
6. Remove yourself from the situation and thread.

Good talk, everyone.

Yes, please, cue the flood of arrogant, self-righteous dribble bashing religion.

Am I religious, somewhat. Even if I was not, the obnoxious prattle that many people spew forth would sicken me. I grow weary of the constant assault that Christianity endures, it (and many other religions) being judged by people not ever remotely qualified to do so.
Who WOULD be qualified to bash your religion, if you don't mind me asking?

I agree that some people bash religions for stupid reasons. This topic too has nothing to do with religion. The monk who did this was obviously not acting in accordance to his religion, but was just doing what he thought was right (and with him being an idiot, fucking it up even more). I'm sure religions help many people deal with life, but they also give many idiots the conviction to do what they please in the name of god (or whatever entity that religion worships). Stupid atheists then bash the religion for causing it, which is silly because it was stupidity that caused it, not the religion.

Stupid people are everywhere, in every religion or lack thereof, and in every country. Don't blame the religion or country for the stupidity of some of its members, blame yourself for not even trying to fix the problem.

Yup, gonna agree with everyone else; stupid people are stupid. However, this is only indicative of the stupidity of the father and the monk, not Buddhism or even religion as a whole. The article even has someone quoted as saying that the ritual is not meant to be used for exorcisms, and the person certainly isn't meant to be strapped to a chair.

What? Unless you have a great certainty that someone is possessed by a demon, you should not be exorcising them. Since you can't prove anything like that, exorcisms should never be taking place, especially when they're risky like this.

Yeah, i read it...it reads like an excuse rather than a reason. I'm taking the view that it was murder with a religious excuse attached. Naughty daughters beware!

And they're not brainwashed they're scared. I have two siblings who are sociopaths (my family never thought demons were involved) and it can pretty fucking scary around them especially when they're willing to straight up murder you because they weren't allowed outside.
And how do you come up with the numbers?

People who believe the earth is flat are brainwashed. People who believe the earth is a few thousand years old are brainwashed. People who believe Jesus will literally come down from the clouds and usher in the Rapture within their lifetime are brainwashed. People who believe yelling chants at a mental patient is going to cure them are brainwashed. "Scared" has nothing to do with whether you've been told something (and believe it) on bad or no evidence whatsoever.

I don't see how your brothers come into this. It was scary, so?
Actually what you're describing is either stupidity, or desperation, and being scared has everything to do with exorcism, because if the parents weren't scared they wouldn't think that their kid has a demon inside of them. And my brother and sister come into the picture because when it comes to Exorcism deaths it always turns out the kid was mentally ill, and not possessed. I was just stating a personal fact about how it can be easy to think that some one is from hell especially when they scare the shit out of you like my siblings. We never believed they were but the thought crossed our minds.

This is hilarious, but it went the other way around. #1 should be arguments for exorcism. then rebuttals calling first guy an idiot. etc., etc.. :)

OT: Personally I am non-religious. That is to say I am not a member of any organized religion. I am not an athiest. My entire family is Christian, though. My uncle is the minister at our church. I have had many very interesting theological debate with him. I wish we could have real theological debate here, unfortunately, too many people will butt in with "duur, religion is stupid and those who believe in something are brainwashed idiots".

Those who believe in something they can't see are not 'brainwashed idiots'. I just don't know what else to say that isn't going to get bogged down my internet jerks. It's too bad really because this is a very interesting subject.
