I was trying to sleep and my sick mind came up with something quite disturbing that could be the premise for a really really terrifying game. It's basically a very similar idea to System Shock 2 where you have a Rogue AI (A virus in this case) that is able to infect and utilize any electrical component with a processor.

In the year 2024 a strange transmission is picked up from space. About 15 minutes after the transmission is spotted by the ISS station in orbit over Earth, the station goes silent. The TSA (Terran Space Association) analyzes the transmission but is unable to decode much of the data it contained. The TSA then sends a team to investigate the ISS, now orbiting derelict over Earth. (This will be the prologue mission. You play as one of the away team members). During the mission you find out that the stations computers have been seized by a malevolent AI program, and before killing you it tells you that it has also infected computer systems on Earth. It says there is no hope for your species and that they are destined to serve them. The AI triggers a reactor overload which causes a rather large breach in the station's hull and you're sucked out into space, your death marking the end of the prologue mission.

Back on Earth many of the planet's mechanized industries shut down. It doesn't take long for the TSA to realize what is going on, but before they can effectively react the AI has established processing plants that have yet to show their true purpose. Initially it was believed that it would manufacture AI controlled robots, but the AI had a much worse fate for mankind. Scattered reports of disfigured people assaulting and killing others begin to surface. Several people were processed in the recently established plants where they were implanted with crudely made prosthetic limbs and weapons. Those known later as the "Processed" remain conscious while the AI controls their bodies to kill and capture more bodies for processing.

Things heat up rather quickly, and you as the main character find yourself rudely awoken by a crying woman breaking into your home. This woman has had her arms and legs replaced, although she keeps yelling at you to "Get away from me, please!". As you spot the woman in your living room she begins to cry and scream as her body grabs your dog and kills him. Left with no way to defend yourself you must find a way to escape your home and flee to wherever you can. Upon leaving your home you'll notice screaming in your neighbors home. A brief FMV will play explaining that Mr. Dobbs is a worker at the local vehicle manufacture. You hear the screaming of Mr. Dobb's wife and a baby's cries. The FMV marks one of the most disturbing scenes of the game. You will see Mr. Dobbs' AI controlled body killing his wife as he consciously listens to her pleas for him to stop. After the wife is killed the camera turns to the baby where Mr. Dobbs begs the AI not to make him do it, and the FMV quickly cuts off putting you back into control over your own body. You can't hang around, as the aforementioned female that killed your dog is now hot on your tail.

So yes, as you have probably guessed this is a very very disturbing game, and yes it is of the survival horror genre. Throughout the game you will need to kill some of these poor enslaved people. Some will beg you not to kill them, others will beg you to end their suffering. Later in the game TSA researchers determine that it is impossible to restore a processed human to their normal selves without killing them. At that point in the game you've found your way to a TSA/Military controlled zone where you begin to do tasks to eventually stop the AI invasion. Not sure how I'd end the game, though. Not sure whether I'd want it to have a positive ending or not. Anyways I just thought I'd share the idea with fellow forum members.

Sounds a bit like the movie Virus.

A game that follows your idea would earn a place on my shelf...though I'd be too freaked out to play it.

I quite like that.. Especially the disturbing scene. I don't think the ending to the game should be positive. Maybe you could change the characters around. So, you could play a guy who's hiding in his house with his family trying to work out how they're all going to survive... Or a hobo waking up hungover to all of this stuff happening around him. Could be a bit like a JJ Abrams game where all the characters cross paths.

Not messed up at all. I'd rather love to play this game if it was created.

Wow, I have to admit, that does sound like a good game. I actually would considerr buying a game like that if it came out.
Though, the ending would be a tough choice. I wouldn't know how what to decide (positive or negative) but if it went negative it could end with you becoming one of the AI's enslaved people, limbs and all.

That seems like a neat idea. I get hints of other survival and horror games in there too, but not obvious.

hmmmm

Great idea, I would definitely play it!
I have an idea, what if, about halfway through the game, you are captured by the AI, and processed. You would get new abilities, but then you fight the free military. But they capture you, and through a small miracle, are able to reprogram you. You then have to make it into the AI fortress and overload the reactor, destroying the AI and yourself.

I have the perfect idea for an ending. During your final mission you are tasked with breaking into a large factory and datacenter where you are to upload an anti-virus into the computer systems and reboot the systems. During the mission you are captured and thus marks the end of your game. An FMV shows a young girl breaking into the datacenter and trying to sneak to the computers to restart the systems. You have no control over yourself and you chase her around the facility. Just as you're about to kill her she reboots the systems and finishes where you left off. You stab the girl in the chest just as you shut down along with the whole computer network. I think it's a good ending because it does provide a nice climax while not going into too much detail on how or if humanity ever recovers. Leaving things like that open to speculation is something a lot of games fail to do.

EDIT: Thanks j0z. Although I wasn't too keen on your idea exactly it did lead me to my current ending.

Work this in with some good writing (and abit of tweaking) as a "not-to-obvious-plot-twist" and you've got yourself a game.

Yeah, it would have to have good writing, and done subtly, and NOT TOLD ON THE CASE like a certain game (*cough* HAZE *cough*).

Sounds like a bizarre mix of the movie Virus and Condemned: Criminal Origins. You have an interesting scenario and it sounds like you have a few specific scenes planned out, but in order to have an actual game, you need interesting game mechanics, level progression and design that fits the story arc. I hate to say it, but you still have a LOT of work ahead of you before you can even consider this to be a game rather than a twisted sci-fi/horror tale.

Didn't this happen in Quake 4 or one of those other gray-and-brown shooters?

If it did, then my idea was completely unintentional, since I have never played Quake 4. So I'm innocent of plagarism!
