It's clear that our 7-10 game review scale leads to highly inflated review scores. I believe Metacritic should introduce an A-Fgrading system to compensate for this. Let me demonstrate with some of this year's games:

A: 92-100. A definite GOTY contender. Only minor flaws detract from an excellent game.
e.g. Skyrim, Portal 2, Arkham City and Skyrim

B: 85-91. A polished, well-made game let down by some poor design choices or lack of originality.
e.g. Modern Warfare 3, Dead Space 2, Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3 (PC)

C: 76-85. Overall, an enjoyable if slightly disappointing game. But has frustrating sections, narrative shortcomings, etc.
e.g. Bulletstorm, RAGE, Warhammer 40K: Space Marines, Sonic: Generations

D: 65-75. A somewhat tedious game, with serious flaws that may turn some palyers off.
e.g. Alice: Madness Returns, Deadly Premonition, El Shaddai, Red Faction: Armageddon.

F: 0-64. A downright terrible game. A disappointment and an unmitigated failure.
e.g. Duke Nukem Forever, Call of Juarez: The Cartel, Bodycount, X-Men: Destiny.

What do you think? Are these scores fair/accurate?

To be honest, we need to get rid of the people who think anything below 75 means its a bad/disappointing game.

Make 50 the base line for average again!

I don't like to blow my own trumpet [sub]okay that's a lie I totally do. What man doesn't?[/sub] but I did just make a thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.322281-Is-game-reviewing-broken-as-a-system?page=1] about this very topic yesterday, now spanning three pages :p

I take game reviews with a grain of salt anyway, but essentially, it seems like everyone does what you're proposing in their head anyway. People no longer associate a 5/10 as an "average" score. They instead associate 7/10 with an average score. If you're already doing it, why should metacritic go through some bit process to change the numbers that you're going to reinterpret anyway?

I thought we were already on the A-F system, which is what was leading to all these 70+ scores.

I reckon the current scoring system is fine just as it is, because we all know how it is inflated.
Good starts at 90%.

I like the fact you don't rate "failure". I think it's pointless too.

But the fact is that a 64% game is VERY different from a 35% game. And I don't think a game with 75% is "tedious".

For me, a game between 70 and 79 is a 8/10 if you like the genre, and a 6/10 if you don't (ie you shouldn't bother with it). Example? Brink. Right now the lower price benefits the game, but paying full price for what looks like a DLC that makes customization it's flagship but doesn't even let you play with feminine characters would make it a 6 or 7 game.

But do you love Parkour (even if not so well implemented) and weapon customization, it's a nice game to enjoy a few minutes every day.

Other than that, A-F grading kind of reminds me of 0-5 rankings, and I hate those.
