So apparently Metacritic, IGN, 1-10 ratings etc are all evil and unreliable. Is there anywhere one can consistently get decent game reviews that haven't been influenced by the developer >:| nowadays?

$10 says this thread won't get over 3 posts.

..unbiased?

Do people even know the meaning of this word? Reviews are inherently biased towards the reviewer's opinion, we're not talking objective standards here, there are none.

From me. Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, Counter Strike and Gary's Mod are good. Everything else is shit. See, unbiased.

I guess you could try Yahtzee lol.

Btw I know that IGN have a giant stiffy for COD, but they still do some pretty good reviews :p

You can't have an unbiased opinion, some sites such as IGN can have horrible amounts of bias and some sites have less.

In the end there is only one person who can make the proper judgement on whether something is good or not...

...you.

In the end it is up to you whether you like something or not based on your own criteria.

The system metacritic uses makes it, by nature, as unbiased as you can be from a realistic point. As an above poster mentioned, all reviews are going to be biased to some extent, but when your review is just an average of everyone elses reviews, the result is going to be as close to the truth as you can get.

It's logic, worth is relative to opinion, and metacritic is the numeric average of however many major opinions it can find.

I think you owe each one of us 10 bucks.

Also, most normally evolved humans are capable of forming their own opinion (aka review) of any subject matter. Aren't you one of us?

Seconded. That is to say, this.

A reviewer plays a game then writes about what it was like to play that game. That experience, and their subsequent description of it, is inherently subjective.

False. Destructoid did an unbiased review of Final Fantasy XIII.

..shit. Though I love that a guy trying to argue the same point as me disproves it.

Also, I just realised FOX News has "Fair and Balanced" debates and opinions. Check there next?

Yeah, but that Review is Satire about the fact that you can't deliver an objective statement without it becoming useless.

People don't seem to get that the more objective truth you put in a scentence the less informative it becomes. Here is an example:

I like chocolate. - Subjective Statement, nearly no absolute truth in it.
You either like chocolate or you don't. - Absolute Truth, but entirely useless.

I can give you an unbiased review of every game ever. Right here, right now:

X is a video game. It belongs to a genre of video games (or it may not) but because the lines between genres are not universal, I cannot tell you what genre this game belongs to. Some people might like X, but some people might not like X. You should buy X if you like it, or don't if you don't want to. Similarly, you should not buy X if you don't like it, or if you still want to buy it you should, or don't.

Just replace X with the particular game, and ta dah: and un-biased review.

This.

And I wouldn't say Metacritic is "evil", exactly. Just packed with people who generally think too much of their opinion and too little of actual experience with what they're reviewing.

Video game reviewing is evil.
Or rather... reviewing as a profession is evil.

No one can keep their personal feelings completely out of the subject they're picking apart. If you're going to go into the details of how something is built up and how it might appeal to others then your own immersion will play a part in whether or not you'd recommend it to another person.

If we don't enjoy something we just automatically assume others won't enjoy it either. Thus comes the useless reviews that's been mentioned earlier. Namely the ones where you simply say "either you like this kind of stuff or you like that kinda jig, if you're the latter then you won't enjoy the former".
