I used to listen to metal a lot as a teenager. I'm now 36 and I rarely do these days. I didn't change my taste though - metal just changed. It went all nu-metal for a while with rap influences (which mostly didn't suit it), and now it's all this "metalcore" stuff which doesn't really interest me much either
You forgot the abomination that was the funk-metal fusion trend before nu-metal... or maybe you didn't forget but were supressing the memory, in which case I apologise.
Oh god, now you've done it. Now I have to spend the rest of the day trying not to think about Mordred and Scatterbrain. Ugh.

Yeah but you're also a Croweater, and a year or so younger than me so if you deep into the Adelaide metal scene at the time... heh... Oh, the bitching of many bass players who were forced to learn funk bass... and the bitching of bands looking for bass players that weren't happy unless they were doing some funk bass solo... Heh... I got to watch it from the outers where the metal and punk scenes crossed over. Although I did know the guys from a certain punk band that used a lot of funk bass.

Stop reminding me about bad things. Also I'm sure you noticed that the only bands from Adelaide that ever got anywhere meaningful didn't touch any of that crap.

Heh. Damned right they didn't and rightly so, the trend chasing fucks. I remember Kim from The Mark of Cain bouncing a beer jug off my head for joking that he should start playing funk (and speaking of TMOC they'd better pull their fingers out on putting out their next CD... it's been 7+ fucking years).

Come to think of it, the only Aussie 'metal' act that really messed about with funk at all that still went anywhere was Nokturnl that I can think of... and despite them touring in Europe every now and then, they disappeared off the national radar real quick... and the only reason I even know that is one of them guys in the band is my cousin.

Hahahaha what a thing to suggest to TMOC's bass player... surprised your fingers still work well enough to type this... and yeah they are slack aren't they. They also don't play gigs anywhere near often enough for my liking.

I remember Nokturnl getting a bit of coverage about ten years ago. Nice to know they're still out there in some manner or form because I thought they were okay.

Well we were having beers at the Ex wayyyyyy back when so it was all in good fun... not like I was tormenting John the Beast with a donut or anything like that. 'Sides, I'm bigger than the Scott brothers and, unless you're a drummer, I used to be a lot scarier than them.

Apparently they've recorded their next CD, just all the production and post-production work needs to be done. Hopefully that means they'll be playing a bunch of local gigs to warm up for a tour in support of it's release.

Yeah they had... ummm... maybe 4-5 years of half-decent to good national exposure. Showed up on some ABC and SBS shows, go a lot of love from Triple J, played a lot of support gigs (including nationally supporting Public Enemy and I think twice supporting Spiderbait on national tours)... then yeah, same old story... local flavour wore off. By that time they'd at least gotten rep enough get some attention in Europe so they lucked out there.

I'm 17 and I've more or less outgrown it.

I loved it about a year ago but now I can't listen to most of it. Except for Opeth. God, I love Opeth.
What bands did you outgrow? There are many bands of a vein similar to Opeth that are awesome, such as Meshuggah and Porcupine Tree. It's kind of funny really, as one could say that those bands split Opeth's music right down the middle, playing the crazy-heavy and the awesome-melodic, respectively.

I used to listen to quite a bit of power metal, but I must say that I have grown out of it. It's just that I don't really like such aggressive music nowadays, I won't go any harder than Judas Priest, and I usually only listen to that when I play something like L4D2.

But I don't see it as a rule or anything, my uncle who's nearing 40 still listens to melodic metal pretty often.

Reel Big Fish falls under
Ska/ska punk. There are some other pretty cool bands that fall under that label, like Streetlight Manifesto [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ije7d6xckSs] and The Aquabats [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEQitya7uWM]. It's a really happy genre isn't it.
