I think it's just because nobody really likes Raiden. Like, at all. And I don't get that, I like Raiden. I actually prefer him to Snake, a statement that has earned me hatred up to and including death threats from hardcore Metal Gear fans.
Really? Just . . . really!?! Ugh. This is why I hesitate to ever call myself a fan of any given series, people take games way too seriously.

I'm curious how so many people through it was going to be a stealth game from that trailer. He ran around chopping up several people. It was called Lighting Bolt Action. Could that have not been more obvious? Did you want one hit kills as shown? That doesn't make for a very fun game. It's just a bunch of winey fans who saw a 2 minute trailer and projected their dream game onto it and now have to face reality.

I don't get how people think it will ruin the franchise either. You have MGS5 in development so it's not like this game will affect the main series. Not to mention Kojima even went as far as renaming it to further illustrate it's not part of the main series. Also for those who say it's too unrealistic to fit in the MGS world, go play MGS4 again. Or just look up one of the several youtube videos that get posted showing how ridiculous Raiden is (such as the gekko fight).

The only thing I'm sad about is the fact P* decided to do a different story. I wanted to see how Raiden became a cyborg, and P* may be great at gameplay but story-telling is their weakness.
The rumors are that Kojima's team are still doing the story, Platinum is doing the gameplay. I'm too lazy to try and confirm that, though.

OT: I love how people are denouncing it as a "button-masher" when all we've seen is an updated trailer showing an extremely small section of the game, without even showing a person actually controlling the character. How do you automatically know it'll be a "button-masher"? Because Devil May Cry was? Stop right there, criminal scum illogical tangents. Devil May Cry may have been a hack&slash game, but it required quite a fair amount of finesse to get through, especially on harder difficulties. I haven't played Bayonetta, but Vanquish has pretty accomplished combat, both gameplay and difficulty-wise.

EDIT: Oh, and the game has been announced for like, two years now. In all of that time it has been about "Lightning Bolt Action" documenting Raiden alone. Stop acting surprised that it's an action game focused on Raiden.

Individuals that have no knowledge of the story or how the game actually plays like to throw out aspersions because they can't accept a change, even though that's the biggest criticism of a long running series: stagnation.

I for one, believe it was a fantastic idea bringing Platinum Games (no one can deny their credentials) for the game as they actually have a chance of making it fun to play. The early trailers did not look for exciting gameplay. That and the faith that the story will be solid and I think this will be an impressive game.

And also the fact that it was originally was made to be Between 2 and 4 to show Raiden how he became his Cyborg Ninja. But now they changed the story to AFTER, which makes no freaking sense. EVERYTHING was solved at the end of MGS4, no cliff hangers, no secret villians. Nothing.
Completely true. MGS was done, the story finished. A story about Raiden I could live with, but not set after MGS4. Sure, it's now a spin-off, but that doesn't mean it should completely ignore what MGS was.

Gamers throw fits when they think games aren't named 'properly'.

It was fine when it was called Risen these past 2 years or so. The minute they added Metal Gear, its time to ***** and complain like it's the end of the world. It's not a new phenomenon.
When was it called Risen? Risen is a completely different game...
Doh!

I uhm, er... yeah. Rising, not Risen.

EDIT: To anyone saying 'this isn't what the game was supposed to be like', can you link what story made you think so? It's always been a hack and slash from what I've heard.
I swear I read a Game Informer (or some such) article about how it was going to be a fast paced stealth game with very detailed dismemberment, and enemies would typically die with one such strike. But that would have been a few months or maybe even a year ago, so my memory isn't to be trusted entirely.

This might make some people angry but I'm looking forward to this game (and the new devil may cry). I'm a big fan of over the top hack and slash games and I couldn't be happier for a chance to play as cyborg ninja Raiden.
As for all the hate, well take that with a grain of salt. The people complaining about MG Rising the most will be same ones at its midnight launch.

People don't like change, or spinoffs.

But I strongly suggest people watch the 30 minute documentary that has been made about the rise and fall of Metal Gear Rising (it's on youtube) as that explains why it's not the game that was announced and I, personally, believe they made the right decision in not making the game they had originally intended to.

It's not going to be anything like the announced game we'll probably end up with another typical Devil May Cry/God of War/Bayonetta slash em up when I was really looking forward to the original system, especially with Move controls.

I liked the original concept better. Had better graphics, better gameplay elements (in my opinion) and just looked less like a rip off of DmC. I'll probably still buy this, but not until the price drops.

I scratch my head at all the rage directed at the new metal gear rising game. Largely because I don't understand it. I have played a large chunk of the Metal Gear games, and this newest one looks great. People are pissing and moaning that the game isn't 'like the other metal gear solid games'. Well...yeah. You're entirely right.

That's because it's NOT a Metal Gear SOLID game. It's Metal Gear RISING. Kind of like a side-story. Secondly, the cyborg ninja has always fought like this. Very much bombastic and in-your-face outrageous. Let's not forget Grey Fox's intro in MGS. He appears in sprays of blood, carrying a dead guy on his sword, and it only went up from there. The ninja's only 'stealth' was a cloaking generator.

So...someone please explain to me why everyone is up in arms over this. Are their complaints legitimate, or is this just a case of gamers being contrary because something is being changed?
People fear change, especially video game changes. I always welcome change. Sometimes it sucks, sometimes its a relatively good surprise.

I'm a HUGE Metal Gear SOLID fan and I have absolutely NO ISSUES with this game. I'm actually highly anticipating the game about 100x more than I did beforehand, I really didn't want a serious Metal Gear Solid game starring Raiden to be honest. But now with Platinum making the game, I'm totally stoked. They are going to make basically the equivalent of a really cheesy and awesome B-movie revenge/REVENGEANCE!!! flick. Raiden's voice is already 100x more gravelly in the trailer. Platinum is going to give Raiden every cool cliche in the book while being 100% self-aware that Raiden is not cool.

I don't even understand the story hate because I'm sure the story isn't going to change anything. You guys are totally over analyzing it. It'll probably be like Raiden getting back Rose or Sunny and everything is going to return to status quo anyways. So, what we are going to get is just an epically awesome Platinum game in the Metal Gear universe, and I CAN'T WAIT.

I'm mainly a PC gamer who loves games all around and hate seeing this attitude among PC gamers. Quit making us out to be a bunch of condescending pricks.
Perhaps they shouldn't have announced it for the PC then unannounced it? Me being a prick? they're the pricks, I'm merely reacting to the stimuli.

Stop being self-righteous.

Because he picks up a ray and smashes it into a building it wouldnt be bad if it was a gekko but a ray just seems to be pushing it as far as willing suspension goes

Pretty disappointing to see this. As a PC gamer, I hate it when PC players give console fanboys a reason to say "PC gamers think that they're better." Normally there's no substance to that, so don't give em any ammunition.

OT: I'm completely uninformed here, but I thought this was going to PS3 AND Xbox. If so, it might be Playstation fans wanting all of the "Good Metal Gear" to themselves.

Wtf are you talking about? You've taken my quote way out of context and never suggested in anyway to say that.

You know, not everyone has a PS3 and/or Xbox 360.

Quoted your entire post so I'm not sure what you mean about out of context--you threw out something that sounded pretty PC fanboyish, and I wanted to correct the image of PC gamers in the eyes of rational forum-goers. YOU didn't say PC gamers are better, but your post might be construed to mean that and that gets unpleasant. I meant no disrespect to you, rather to people who might take your comment the wrong way.

They seem to have abandoned the entire stealth aspect, since originally it was supposed to have an aggressive "hunt the people hunting you" stealth instead of the standard hide from people until you can get by stealth, but the newest trailer makes it look like it is pure hack and slash. Then Platinum changed it to take place after 4 instead of between 2 and 4. So that is why people are mad about it. Personally, I am disappointed for the setting change, but I still really want it. It looks like the type of game I have wanted recently.
