So most of you like normal crappy vox as opposed to bestial groans of death? Sounds to me like the vox are doing their job and keeping ass wipes from contaminating a great musical genre. The last thing death metal needs is melodic vox. It's already been poisoned by melodic music.
The reason the vox are harsh is that the whole thing is supposed to have an evil, dark atmosphere. The folks that started this type of music didn't want people like you as fans. They wanted other like-minded nutters also obsessed with dark and hate-filled thoughts.

I for one hate melodic, I despise its existence within metal. I hunger for total abrasion in my listening experience, and that is why I listen to extreme metal.

If you cannot deal with death metal vox, I suggest you listen to whatever it is you do like, and stop moaning that it's the voices that keep you away. Let me tell you, actual DEATH metal couldn't care less about you.

I enjoy music. I enjoy...Harsher music..than most other people that I know. However, I have never really been able to get into death metal music because of one thing: Their vocalists. Death Metal and the metal genre in general are both extremely complex and entertaining instrument wise, but for some reason they all seem to find the same kind of vocalists: Either a shrill, ear shattering screecher, or a jagged, rusty growling cookie monster impersonator.
A short story: I once went to a concert (don't remember the band) with a Death-Metal Forband (is that the correct word? The unknown band playing before the band you paid for?) Anyway. I was standing there, drinking my drink when a guy came to me and said "What do you think?". Honest man I am I told him "The band is great, but the singer sucks". His face froze and he gave me his business card. He was their manager... I was pissing myself with laughter and missed the real concert.

Not a huge death metal fan, but I like some black metal, like "Immortal" and "I" (Abbath ftw).
Both aforementioned bands are pretty melodic, especially "I", plus Abbath is understandable.

I do agree that death metal can be a hard genre to get into, perhaps because of the harsh vocals. Its not for everyone and to be honest even after listening to the stuff for a while I find it hard to understand what they are saying and distinguish more by music styles.

Except danny filth. He seems to be entry level death metal in that if you can put up with his vocals, especially the high pitched screamy bits then hell, you can stand anything.
On that note I present this song. These are some of his more easy to like songs as they are quite catchy, and in the case of the second song a cover. Which is brilliant I might add.

Death vocals, like the genre in general, are meant to keep the genre out of the "mainsteam." Of course Metalcore shows that all you have to do is scream about bleeding hearts & suddenly youre making millions but thats beside the point. Specific to the genre, its part & parcel of the sound the bands are going for. Theres always melodic death metal (Arch Enemy, In Flames, Children of Bodom etc) if youre looking for a genre with the word "death" in it that isnt all just growls/squeals .

Besides, if you dont like how they sing; do you really want to hear the lyrics to songs like this [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wqOJD_TdIKY]? :-D

*no disrespect to dying fetus intended.

It's definitely an acquired taste.
It's not like you should listen to Death metal for the awesome lyrics anyway ;)

Alot of Metal is just COOKIE COOKIE COOOOOKIE with like a couple of misplaced pentagrams and stuff, It's like they all want to be Kiss image wise (meaning more about image than song)

Some Metal can be good but it's usually more melodic or bands like Maximum the hormone just cause they bring out some catchy stuff.

I like the cookie monster singing, nay adore it. It just so...powerful and awe inspiring to hear somebody emit primal growls like that. Plus, when you listen to the genre long enough you can actually understand them fairly easily, and you soon realize that they don't all sound the same, each is unique.
Agreed. I was very put off by Death and Black metal in the beginning, but have eventually learned to love it, and have "adjusted" to this way of singing.

What's worse is when metal fans start talking about the individual qualities of the cookie monster impression. As if it's actual music. It's like watching monkeys wear suits and fake mustaches and pretend to be bankers.
Do shut up. Please.

Meh. Cradle is nor death metal, but I'm just nitpicking. Yur main point, I agree with - I learned to listen to growls by listening to Cradle. He's a good one to begin with.

I can easily see why people think badly of growling. After all, many are used to singing being very much about the lyrics, to be something to give extra that extra dimension that is "poetry". However, it should be remembered that vocals is an instrument. In much Death Metal, this is stressed.

Try the band All That Remains. There vocalist screams alot, but he also has a nice voice in some bits.

What I'm getting from here is that I should listen to more death metal and try to get used to it?
Just try it out for a while, if you do get used to the vocal style you definitely won't regret it. If not... no problem, there's still tons of other subgenres to enjoy. I could recommend a crap load bands to start with, but to avoid this turning into another recommend bands thread I'll leave it at that.

I actually liked them quite a bit. I just like a slight break from the screaming, maybe this can get me into metal.

Cool, If it's still a little heavy, try some of their newer stuff like Two Weeks and Chiron.

Could you clear one thing up for me, are you trying to get in to metal in general or death metal specifially? I ask because if you where saying all metal singers are high pitched screamers or cookie monster singers, then I would have to tell you to look into some other genres.

Anyway may I recomend you try out Turisas they are a Viking band that is somewhat harsh without going for the whole cookie monster sound.
