Could you clear one thing up for me, are you trying to get in to metal in general or death metal specifially? I ask because if you where saying all metal singers are high pitched screamers or cookie monster singers, then I would have to tell you to look into some other genres.

Anyway may I recomend you try out Turisas they are a Viking band that is somewhat harsh without going for the whole cookie monster sound.
Death Metal, I already listen to slower, less harsh metal, but I am trying to expand into death metal, mainly because it is so awesome instrumentally.

I am a big fan of Hegg (I can't remember his first name at the moment)from Amon AMarth, a melodic death metal band that is also in the Viking metal Genre. He is an amazing vocalist as he actually sings while doing the death growls.

His first name is Johan.
And I agree, he's really awesome, he actually sounds a bit better (I think) on their latest album.

My personal favorites are Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica, Andi Deris of Helloween (though most people prefer Kai or Kiske), and Ozzy.

Since most of the posts in this thread are about screamy yelly singers, I'll throw in Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom since he's the only screamy yelly singer that I like. Apart from CoB, death metal or screamo or screamy yelly metalcore aren't really my thing.

I'm not much into death metal because I don't like the vocal style, but I think I can safely say that Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy can scream melodically.

The reason the vox are harsh is that the whole thing is supposed to have an evil, dark atmosphere. The folks that started this type of music didn't want people like you as fans. They wanted other like-minded nutters also obsessed with dark and hate-filled thoughts.

I for one hate melodic, I despise its existence within metal. I hunger for total abrasion in my listening experience, and that is why I listen to extreme metal.

If you cannot deal with death metal vox, I suggest you listen to whatever it is you do like, and stop moaning that it's the voices that keep you away. Let me tell you, actual DEATH metal couldn't care less about you.
I personally hate this mentality with metal just because it is called metal does not mean it needs to be abrasive dark and evil metal like all forms of music is a way to output someones thoughts and ideas which ever they may be. That being said I will throw in my two cents and say give mercenary and scar symmetry a shot
