Same here. I'm a gamer and all round geek, yet I'm more of an 'indie-geek'. I prefer indie-folk and indie-rock, and alt-rock, to anything metal. My favourite bands are people like Metric, Broken Social Scene, Florence and the Machine, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Editors, Klaxons, etc.

So yeah, OP, I have no idea why people here seem to prefer metal to other styles of music. Of course, there is some good metal out there, I do enjoy to some degree artists like Dragonforce and Tenacious D (though they're more a comedic metal/alt-rock hybrid, to me at least)...

However Pop Punk seems to be mostly made of bands who write every song with a verse-chorus song structure in 4/4 using very simple chord progressions and simple chords every time.
Well, lets put it this way, you seem to listen to the music and its structure more that the lyrics. I listen for the lyrics. Metal lyrics don't reach me, pop/punk lyrics do. I can connect much better with the lyrics, so I listen more.

It all comes down to opinion and taste in the end. Either way, you can't make me see different and I can't make you see different.

I prefer pop/punk and a bit of post-hardcore.

I actually dislike metal due to the (generally) samey nature of each and every song.
Go listen to 'metropolis' by dream theatre, 'rammlied' by rammstein, 'a little piece of heaven' by avenged sevenfold and 'raining blood' by slayer and tell me they sound the same. You can even just listen to bits of them. I'll wait.

Oh hang on you put 'generally' weeell i can give you that then. But Id still encourage you to listen to those songs. I don't mind if u don't like metal but calling it 'samey'... daaaamn thats treading thin ice :L

Why is that everyone who dislikes Metal always says that its samey when its acctually NOT samey at all.
I saw Porcupine tree live in concert. Every song was exactly the same. This is the same case with most songs I hear.

I say it because it is what I hear. Just like you probably hear music I like and think it whiny and emo, when most of it isn't at all.

Its what I hear based on my own likes and dislikes.
OK here are a few metal songs that I love and if you can listen to these and still use "samey" as a reason to dislike metal... well I guess I have to give up. I understand people not liking metal but basing an opinion on an entire genre from one live gig? That's a pretty poor argument.

I like mostly Trance, electro-pop, electro-house

another reason why I have nothing in common with 99% of gamers.

The only thing classed as "metal" on my iPod is Mastodon and I'm not even that into them. I tend to steer more towards ska/skate-punk and Hardcore. I got into many bands like Comeback Kid and Rise Against because I first heard them on a videogame. One of the reasons why I fucking loved skateboarding or BMX games was because they had some fucking amazing music on them.

They should release a "Ska Hero" game...that would be amusing.
How would you make the trumpet peripheral?

But it would be cool, start out with first wave Island Hop as your band goes through the generations of ska with rip offs of some of the better known band members. But instead of going from a shady bar to the huge amphitheater, it would go from the shady bar to a shadier bar to a bar that has working lights and supplies speakers to a small gig at a fair to that amphitheater and back to the shady bar for you final song. And instead of retiring after your monumental song that only your core fans have heard, you have a kid and need to get a real job.

I don't actually know that many gamers that like metal. But I am probably the second biggest metal fan of the people I know. I listen to most forms of metal, even the occasional death-core. My favorite form is probably melodic death. But I still like things other than metal, like country, rock, rockabilly, punk, etc.

Well, I strongly dislike metal, so I tend to feel left out of threads about metal. I just don't get musical genres. I don't see why you should only enjoy sounds associated with certain genres

Well 50:50 for me.

At home I love my metal, Nu Metal speciafically, and have it playing when I'm gaming (until there's dialogue). When I'm out, dane, trance, electronica are the only things that get me moving (with addition of copious amounts of alcohol).

Revision is another thing still, with orchestral/classical music quietly playing in background.

NOOOO metal can take a hike for all I care.

Rock, indie, electronic and house is were it's at. Also that nasty little thing called 'unclassifiable', minus all the actually classifiable music that just wants to be interesting.

I kinda have mixed feelings about music as a whole, I like a little bit of everything but my personal choices seem to fluctuate wildly. Though when gaming it's always Techno, some Metal, or that kind of classical music that's just purely awesome... or almost anything from the 1980's.

I'm not sure why metal appeals. Maybe it's just the whole "underground" feel of both things. Metal is kind of an undergroundish type of music i.e. not especially mainstream. Video games, while slowly becoming more and more mainstream, still have their titles that have a similar feel. I don't know.

My friend plays MGS online. He likes to listen to music while he plays (as I guess some people do) and often asks people what they're listening to. He hears people say things like "Avenged Sevenfold" or "Slayer". Then he tells them he's listening to John Coltrane and gets confused. I've seen him. He listens to Coltrane while playing MGS online. Interesting tidbit?

In conclusion, I have no solid idea. No one's gone to do research of gather evidence on the matter. All we have is conjecture.

I listen to classic rock, some jazz, prog rock, a little bit of modern indie, and classical/baroque/etc.

Heard all of those songs. Abhor Dream Theater. I don't know why, I just do. I seriously cannot explain why I dislike them so much. Rammleid is one of my least favorite Rammstein songs. A Little Piece of Heaven was the best song on A7X's best CD. Raining Blood is a terribly overhyped song which actually turned me off Slayer merely because of all the (in my opinion: undeserved) praise it gets.

Guess I'm treading thin ice. /shrug

First song: Couldn't stand the singer's voice. At all. Lyrics are a bit... well... eh, in my mind. Not my cup of tea.

Second song: Hated it. Not a fan of swing music, no matter if you add heavy guitars or not.

Third song: The lead vocalist is not singing, or screaming, he's growling. I much relate it to Ke$ha's "sing-talk" that she uses. Not much a fan.

Fourth: Never ever liked Megadeth. Any of their stuff. Just not what I like.

Sure, these don't all sound exactly the same. But you play a playlist of any of those songs and similar songs for me, and I guarantee you that I will barely be able to recognize the difference between the songs.

For those rest who quote me on this

I respect your views on metal. I don't like it. you are not going to change my mind on it. If you are offended because I dislike your music, too bad, my opinion differs from yours. That is life. Not everyone agrees with you.

I wash my hands of this thread.

Over time, and through the process of maturation, I've realized how much I actually hate most Metal, even Metallica majorly lacks the appeal it once had for me, I now listen to alot of punk and industrial music, and I'm one hell of a gamer.

The only music I really listen to while gaming is the soundtrack featured on the game already. I was a metal fan a while back, but I find myself searching for artists that I heard a long time ago but never remembered. I listened to a lot of old rock when I was growing up, and that's where stayed. Music has to fit the mood and atmosphere of the game. Since a lot of people play violent games, it only makes since that they would listen to more violent sounding music (or lyrics to include rap). Most games I play usually include orchestrated music as oppose to metal. Think of it: would Halo be better if it had metal music? Probably not. Assassin's Creed?... well maybe. Again it all depends on the mood and atmosphere presented to the gamer, I mean, "someone who is playing the game".

I don't know. Metal generally is quite mainstream for at least 15 years now, at least from what i observe in everyday life, on streets of my city. It's more often used in different advertisements, and pretty much every 'teenage' centred product tries to tie itself to metal.
Not my genre tho, i find it boring and the supposed 'subculture' of metalheads as uninspiring, hardly different from pop culture in general.
Really? Everything tatgeted at teens in England appears to be full of indie music and other assorted arse.

I like metal, but I'd only really listen to it while gaming playing fps games or racing games, where I'll listen to metal, ska or punk to get me in the mood. Fast music is to distracting for playing strategy games and I don't want to listen to music when I'm playing an rpg.

I need to be in the right mood for metal, just like any other music, I wouldn't listen to it all the time like some people, and metal that's too heavy is just noise to me (basically anything heavier than Devildriver and it starts getting crap). Scandinavia has produced a vast amount of crap metal for the tiny amount of good metal it has produced. Black metal, death metal and all that take themselves too seriously for my tastes, among other things. Thrash is by and large my favourite type of metal (especially Anthrax. I love Anthrax).
