No, it's perfectly reasonable and one of the platform's key strengths. What you are asking for is strictly worse graphics across the board.
Erm, no I am asking for that best graphics they can do that still makes the game playable on hardware that is available at launch or just afterwards. Stop making the game only playable fully on hardware that is not available until years after the games release. Crysis was available in 2007, but was not fully playable until 2009.
This is, in fact, asking for the game to have worse graphics. If Crytek did what you want, they'd have released Crysis with Low graphics only. No Medium, High or Ultra High option. So when someone boots the game now in 2011, it would never look better than it did in 2007. Please explain: why are worse graphics essential for your enjoyment of the game?

That's dumb. I am not discounting those who quite happily played it through on lower settings before that. I am purely taking about playing games with all settings maxed and it never going under 35 FPS.
That is a ridiculous standard you have chose to set for yourself, no one else's problem. Having graphic options extend to the future is a bonus for anyone who cares about the actual quality of the graphics instead of what the menu says. You haven't been able to show a single actual benefit to limiting IQ to what is achievable at game's release.
