Isn't there a binary you can find in the files to just run it off the disk?
Sorry, minor tech support is all I can provide.
...That's apparently more tech savvy than me. I've explored the disk and double clicked about everything to no avail... But how would one do this "binary" of which you speak?

To make a bit of a discussion here, other than the rants of a mad man, I'd like to ask people if they'd consider pirating it, since it skips all of this bullshit and runs like normal?

Of course, the counter argument is how long you'd be waiting for the torrent.
I'm about anti-pirating as a person gets, but I see your point. I still think the developers of the game deserve some credit though, I mean they probably weren't the ones who came up with this amazing system.

I'm sorry I can't test this myself, though I found this on the Gamefaqs forums.

Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc

1) Log in to Steam and click on Library.

2) Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm. (I didn't have to do this)

3) Insert the first disc into your computer. ( I have only 1 DVD)

4) Close Steam (Steam > Exit).

5) Press Windows Key + R to open Run

6) In the Run window type:

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E:

Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct.

Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.

My example: Steam is installed in D: and My DVD is in G, which gives the following:

D:\Steam\Steam.exe -install G:

7) Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

I also had to update my directx and install the latest driver.
EDIT: Edited for fact that the original author didn't add the forward slashes.

Also, the Steam site has a help page for this:

Sorry, binary is just a nerd-onym for an .exe, or the things you execute to start things like games.
Chances are if you've double clicked everything, then there isn't a way and you have just been bum-fingered by steam.
Shame really, because it's treated me really well.

Ok, what the fuck? I just bought the game, on disk, put it in my computer and it opened up Steam. I put my keycode in and then it starts DOWNLOADING THE FUCKING FILES? I have it on a cunting disk! And it won't even start the download on steam. What do I do? Someone help a steam-tard please.

EDIT: Oh it started now. And it's going to take 4 HOURS? Excuse my rage here BUT I BOUGHT THE FUCKING DISK!? I'm doing something wrong, aren't I?

Further EDIT: No. I'm not trying to flame people/steam. I'm just angry that I have to wait such a retarded amount of time and that I was given no choice in the matter. I am angry yes, but I'm not trying to cause fights.
Steam likes to patch things and seems to like to randomly suspend downloads. It is something that we choose to live with as it is a decent enough DRM/Cloud gaming service.

Relax, when the game if finished you can play it and have a good time. You'll forget all about the waiting, and you'll be grateful for the game.

So until then, go outside or something.

I was just going to get the game on Steam anyway for the convenience of it... but seriously, you buy a disk and need to download it on Steam? WTF! That's mega lame.

Trust me, it's worth the wait. Check every corner in the game and remember, the Stealth Suit isn't needed to be stealthy; it's needed to be clumsy.

Edit: This post isn't nearly helpful enough. The game runs through Steamworks. The disk is just there for confirmation. You get a digital download no matter what.
...This upsets me. Greatly. I paid £30 for something utterly pointless then? Christ I will write angry letters/emails for this.

Thanks though. Guess I'll go for a run or watch some porn or do something with my life while I wait.
You paid thirty bucks for a perfectly good game. It runs through Steam, the only working DRM system archetype that has ever worked. I don't see the issue anymore.
Again, as I said, the box says nothing about requiring online activation/installation. Had they put something on the box, this wouldn't be an issue.
And this is why i consider Steam more of a malware-tool then an actual (gaming)service.
Crap like that is the reason why i buy the disks. Games can do without all this "extra service". In the future, when everything is on Steam, i might actually consider pirating as an option again. :-/

Just thought I'd help you look on the bright side :)

Dam that sounds frustrating.
I normally stick to console gaming and went I do want a PC game, I just download it from using a bit-torrent
X says it. It must Be okay !! jkjk.

In all seriousness I am a console gamer the only reason I would only think about messing with steam is because of valves games having better pc support then their console versions. Pc has never been my favorite game playing system and all the DRM bullshit just makes me like it less and less everyday.

Run the actual disk. Then it will install.

You just put in the code in to Steam, what were you expecting?
This is probably true. I simply installed the game from the Disc. It took about as long as one would expect - 10 minutes or so.

Well, basically you paid £30 for a game. Online or not, you would've spent the money anyway. But yeah, this whole "Steam is obligatory" thing isn't just pissing you off. They could've at least had the decency to add a note about it or something. This also means the game's tied to your account and you can't sell it as second hand. Offline gaming seems to already have a tombstone and a burial site reserved.

Metro2033 can seem pretty mediocre considering gameplay (but it's not really), and reading the reviews doesn't help remove that feeling, but it's actually quite good regarding execution and backstory. You'll be amazed by all the details that help add depth to the game world.

[Wish I could use Russian, but I can't since the loading screen text is a bit off. The stuff I can't see I gotta hear in English. Too bad.]

You're right, and this upsets me. Many people act as though the Internet was a safe and secure place, blithely unaware of how very fragile it is [http://www.cracked.com/article_18453_5-reasons-internet-could-die-at-any-moment.html], not to mention rude [http://www.cracked.com/article_16765_5-ways-stop-trolls-from-killing-internet.html], disturbing [http://enough.org/inside.php?id=2UXKJWRY8] and dangerous [http://www.privacymatters.com/identity-theft-information/identity-theft-statistics.aspx].

However, I think that the best illustration of the foolishness of online dependency is Assassin's Creed 2 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/stolen-pixels/7265-Stolen-Pixels-175-Ubisoft]. Online dependency prevented all legitimate users from enjoying their game, while doing nothing to halt the pirates it was meant to target.

We should put an end to this madness. Stop online dependency now! How can we help curb this menace?

Sorry you're upset. Seems like an odd setup but whatever. Steam has only ever been wonderful to me. I don't know that it's ever been anything but.

dude, fuck, how pissed was i, just bought the retail version like you and same shit. however this worked for me.
start steam in online mode,
start the 2033 installer from the disc,
then steam will start downloading WTF (this is where i fucking lost it too).
then start the installer from the disc again and steam stops downloading and starts installing from the disc. i did this three times before it started, dont know why. i have also in the past with other steam games noticed if you install a game the quit steam completely then restart steam and they seem to work from the disc then.

good luck

Meh. Should have bought it over steam to begin with, then you wouldn't have had to go to the store to buy the disc, and you wont have a disc taking up shelf space.
You should be grateful that the game hooks itself into steam like that. That way when your disc inevitably breaks or disappears you can still play your game.

Asscreed2 did halt piracy... for a short while. Or maybe it didn't halt them, if you think it motivated them to work even harder. I think the way it works today in the industry is to set an example. Anyone here have a free dev team to prove putting everything online is wrong? :p

Note:an example will be coming forth very very sooooon...
