Mexico in your opinion?

Well it's hard not to focus on that, I don't know if you've witnessed any of the violence or not but I personally have and it's well pretty horrible, I mean in Tijuana the most disgusting thing that happened is that I no longer cared if someone was dead, I didn't feel all that disgusted when someone died or I saw someone dead, because it happened every single day it was normal, I mean we are supposed to be at a state of peace right now yet there are more people getting killed here that in actual warzones, so it's kind of hard not to pay attention to that sort of thing.

No i havent witnessed any violence in fact. Mex city is so far the same drug war or not, as if nothing had happened realy, besides traffic jams and the ups and downs of every city; its pretty peaceful atm.
During 2008-2012 i have visited mainly southern states such as Yucatán, Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco and passed by Veracruz. The weeks i was there went also pretty normal with only soldiers in the highways cheking now and then, yet my car was never held back for closer inspection and i passed several of them (with x-ray trucks and all).
I also went to Chihuahua, to the Barrancas del cobre, Mochis, rode in the Chepe last year in october, besides being impressed by its beauty and magnificence of the mountains, there was a pretty much normal touristic travel, no violence, no death bodies, hell not even many soldiers around.

Well, that's deserved if you ask me. The Mayans have doomed us all just because they were too lazy to make a calendar last beyond 2012 and now we got less than a year left to live.

I have mixed feelings when it comes to Mexico. There's so much that's really bad there with both the politics and the economy. It doesn't even seem like they try to hide it. I would like to go there once though

Well the economy in fact its stable right now, it seems the 2008 crisis hit us but not that hard like say Greece, Spain and even the US itself where it originated.

The politics, well its not like we have a choice. We have pretty much only 3 candidates right now and none of them are good or offer a good solution. Democratically speaking we vote as any would, but the parties bhind the candidates will try to buy the votes from the ignorant ppl....like literally buy it with money or food. And you would say -they dont have any food or money- well no there are federal programs that if ur smart u can even live by and do nothing of your life. But...they just dont want to make the effort and i say it by exp of going to -towns lost in the map- where u wish to help but they just dont want help, its a horrible turn down if you ask me.

So with all the ignorant ppl being moved around like cattle for their votes, the ppl that do care and have reasoing will have to vote for the -least bad candidate- in order to prevent the most corrupt candidate or the most fake one to take power and fck us all 4 real.

Part of the problem with the perception of Mexico is that what we hear in other countries is probably mostly what may be of interest to tourists and if you're a tourist you are probably more likely to be mugged, ripped off, scammed, or kidnapped. Its really the same in pretty much any place that attracts lots of tourists but when we add on top of that the number of news stories and movies about government corruption and the drug cartels it really gives an impression of a country full of criminals.

I live in Southern California. The is a rather large number of people even here in the US who think Los Angeles = Compton = daily driveby shootings. Hollywood is more well known than Compton though so it sort of evens out.

Yeah i got to agree with you. Hollywood tarnishes the image of any place. For example, i myself went to Miami and due to all the CSI, Dexter, NCIS and so on series and movies all i could think about is that i would be murdered the second i just walked some blocks by myself. So i really only stayed there in the hotel and took the cruise i was waiting for. Not even wanting to give a look to the city. It all was soo dark and horrible to me thro the cab's glass.

Honestly, I'm surprised (maybe not due to the amount of Americans here) that Mexico is regarded so negatively. If you think Mexico is bad for white women don't even consider Turkey (a "progressive" country) let alone somewhere like Egypt. Honestly, nothing but good things to say about mine and others experiences in Mexico - no sexism or racism... of course it might not be wise to wander around alone in certain areas but that's the same in any country in the world, including those in Britain.

Then again you might face more bigotry if you're an American, just as Mexicans do in the US?

Being Australian the biggest daily threats to my life are standing outside and being glassed by some pin-dick asshole at a club so the idea that some parts of mexico could be considered the most dangerous place on earth is terrifying. So to put it simply I consider it something to be ignored as long as I far, far away from it.

Ha, my honest opinion is I prefer it out in the open rather than behind closed doors. The pretentious pricks we have for politicians here are probably even worse, what with all the bank bailouts and all. Hell, even on a local level where you need to apply for planning permission to build a fucking shed in the garden whereas Tesco can "accidentally" build 200 foot further on their building yet no punishments because the country is run in the interests of big business, not the people. Hundreds of travellers get thrown off their own land and their homes destroyed for far less - they did not have permission to turn a disused scrap site wasteland into additional caravan/trailer parking for example.

My father is from Mexico a small village in the mountains they mostly grown corn for the last hundred yrs or so and I'm talking deep mexico not border town area. That place is scary I miss going there but we have no choice anymore drug lords discovered a few years back that corn grows good there but weed grows like grass there. No its turned into a nightmare with shake downs no police at all and kidnappings. Its so bad right now you cant even get good reports from news because they will kill reporters. Something very bad will happen in the next ten yrs because now its spilling over to the U.S. with people being taken on the border. I give this as a warning bet the next war will be there and I feel sorry anyone who has to suffer in those poor small villages.

It's just like any other country. It has its good spots and its bad. The border towns aren't any place you really want to go. What with the drug wars and the shootings. Especially the Texas border. The resort/touristy areas are quite nice. I had a blast in Cancun. Even ducked over to Isla Mujeres that had some of the most gorgeous beaches and water I've ever seen. Everyone was quite friendly and the vast majority of them spoke english. Which is good cause my spanish consists of handful of words and only three phrases which are "One more beer, please", "Where are the bathrooms", and "I'm sorry".

Yeah, i know what you mean. Tho if u take a look at it if its all in the open it makes ppl loose hope and the drive to make the country itself better.
I mean, going back to the husband-wife analogy, if the husband cheats but hides it from the wife (that loves him to no end) she can say feel or know from outside sources, yet she can not accept it but try to make it better and win him back or accept it but have hope, or ignore it all around and still be with him.
Tho if its open and in cinism, all hope and love just blurs away beacuse its not the cheating itself done but it says: Yes i do it and i dont care, u cant do anything about it and u are a retard ill abuse as long as i want.

Well yeah there are pretty red areas here. But its not like "its spilling" to the US. In all honesty the Drug war is sadly because of the US demand of drug. Its for a reason all red areas are in the northern border. As a mercantile principle, if there is demand there always be product....and the concecuences of said product.
In the general idea of the mexican mind, drugs have a very very bad place. I mean its rare anyone would outright tell you that they have consumed mariguana. But you will hear tons (literally) of all kinds of drugs caught in their way to the US to be sold. As well as weapons being smuggled back.
Mind to tell you in Mex there is no such thing as the right of every civilian to have a fire weapon, its not prohibited either but if you wish one u have to go thro a loooong horrible and tiering process of questioning by the military before they decide to handle you one, if they indeed decide that. There is ofc the smuggled way and those ofc come from the US or Rusia.

Well not really, the whole -most dangerous place of earth- is exagerated A LOT. Hell in my 26 years of living here i have never EVER seen a dead body (outside funerals) and i travel here in Mex a lot around. I might have been horribly lucky, but if it was as bad as -the most dangerous place of earth- well i wouldnt be even typing here and most probably be w/o internet and probably 6 feet buried.

The Mexican people are nice, and they've had a long, storied, rich history and culture. However, their government is absolutely, utterly, totally hopeless and abysmal and corrupt and has led Mexico so deep down the wrong path that nothing can stop a vicious civil war that is sure to come in the next 3 or 4 years.

In short, I like Mexicans and I like Mexican culture but Mexico as a nation is dangerous and ruled by idiotic cowardly politicians and vicious, murderous thugs. The Mexican government let the cartels do whatever they wanted for too long, naively assuming that they could control them - and then the cartels grew so powerful they rival the government. Way to go Mexican government - you've done your people proud, by screwing up the entire nation.

There are only 2 ways this is going to end: The Cartels will grow even more powerful, they will declare open war on each other and the civilian government will cease to exist in many parts of Mexico - effectively Mexican states will split.

Or the government could grow so vicious and brutal in its military response that they crush the cartels at the expense of all liberty.

I see no other way out. The Cartel leaders will never put down their guns.

Or they could just legalise drugs.

The Problem with that solution is that there is too much internal pressure(the cartels) and external pressure(the Usa) to allow that to happen.

There wont be a civilian uprising i would also add, since the ideas of mexicans are different...or very manipulated. As well as in all and all mexican ppl (not the thugs) are peaceful and we try to avoid conflict by using the democratic right of vote. Im not saying is not needed...i would love a uprising in the sorts of "V of Vedetta" even tho the goverment is not oppresive at all, u can pretty much do whatever the hell u want...and i would guess thats the main reason all went down hill.

Yar. I did this odd package deal that included the ruins of Chichen Itza, Tulum, and finished up at Xel-Ha. If I'm remembering it all correctly through the Rum/Tequila/Dos Equis haze Xel-Ha was pretty damned cool. I know lots of people were hitting up the swimming with the dolphins thing they had. All I did was float around and enjoy my intoxication.

I live in mexico and in the last few months I heard gun shots once and later I knew someone was killed a block from my house. On another time I passed by a street that was closed because someone was recently killed. Never seen a murdered body or witnessed a shooting.
