"To the man who sold the world." - I.e. he sold out his own friends so he wouldn't have to endure the phantom pain, which he has now inflicted upon us, the players.

I didn't get gifted this game by another friend only to be told I was playing as a pretender to Big Boss and not Big Boss himself (MGS2 comes to mind), but then again I despise this characterization of the actual Big Boss now. He's been turned into a straight-up villain, no different from any of the other villains of MGS before him.
But, Big Boss pretty much was a straight up villain. In the original MSX games he has virtually no redeeming qualities, there's children running around Zanzibar Land for heaven's sake! The point of 3, Peace Walker, and now V, was to characterise Big Boss, and show HOW he became who he was (something I don't think they succeeded in, but that's another topic). The twist at the end of Phantom Pain was also to explain how Big Boss survived the destruction of Outer Heaven in Metal Gear. Whether or not you like the plot/twist is up to you, but in the context of the series, it makes complete sense.

But he didn't sell out his friends.
Okay, he had Venom Snake put in place instead of himself, but that's not selling them out, it's lying to them. Still not a nice thing to do, but not villainous. He still had Ocelot keep an eye on things, and he trusted Venom and Kaz to keep everything in order. That's hardly villainous.

If anything, the lyrics of "The Man Who Sold The World" actually more bluntly relate to the story of Big Boss in my eyes.
