So yeah just wondering which headsets and microphones are good for gaming and recording. Can be one for both or two separate for each. The one for gaming doesn't need to be amazing just enough noise cancellation to cut out the sound from my piece of shit laptop (hopefully getting rid of it by the end of summer or sooner. The recording needs noise cancel and good at picking up low sounds...seems conter action there but who knows. Anyway the reason being I tend to drop to a really quite voice without noticing so it would be nice to not have to constantly rerecord things and a few of the voices I do tend to be quite-ish. Before anyone asks the recording mic is going to be for the voice acting part of my games (which will take a while before I get that good to have voices in them so it can always wait), and I should (tm) be doing some animation videos soon (more tm) and would like to do some voices in them...which reminds me I need to find a few good voice actresses since my voices are still very...male sounding >.> Thankfully I have a lot of patience...still waiting on my last paycheck from my job a year and a half ago XD

The big thing you're missing that I'd need to make suggestions is price range - without it I'm really just firing blindly. It'd also help to know what kind of recording you're doing, though given my expertise is... well, not actually expertise it probably doesn't matter that much.

I love my G930s for gaming (and will take any excuse to plug them) but you're probably better off with a dedicated mic if you're doing serious recording work (probably one of them fuzzy shield things, too). The mic in my set is pretty good but it sounds ever so slightly gritty when I'm particularly loud...it's great for communication but might sound a bit sloppy if you're trying to do something professional. That being said, I don't know jack about studio-ish quality gubbins so I can't really make a recommendation for the recording side of things. Logic dictates that something on-brand that costs a bit is likely to be good but anything beyond that and I'm clueless.

I'd say up to $100 each. Although, the recording mic can, and most likely will, wait till Im closer to actually needing it. Just be nice to have some ideas of which to look at...though I could just go pester all the youtubers and see which ones they all use XD

That's a pretty decent budget for recording for Youtube videos. I think you'll find that, apart from the bigger Youtubers who are also making films, most will have equipment that's fairly common for simply gaming. Honestly; read some reviews on mid range microphones - separate to your headset - and read some advice on preparing a good environment for recording audio - the combination of the two will do you so much more good than dumping a lot of money into gear.

Well the recording mic is going to be more for games and hopefully some high end videos, like AAA game cinimatics to be put on youtube half as a "look what I can do" and half as a way to get my name out there. I plan to be doing a lot of crunching over the next few months with learning action script and/or c# I was hoping after 3 years I'd come across someone actually interested in programming who wasn't half way across the country/world, didn't already have plans to do a much better paying job, or get bored after a few days and run off with all the tech/work thats been done. Like they say never go into business with "friends" -.-

Anyway, yeah I'll just research myself when I get the time, like I said the recording mic isn't a big rush right now anyway...now if you'll exuse me I seem to have come done with a random case of nose bleed...to excited I guess.

Quoted for attention!
If you're looking for a cheaper mic for professional voice recording, look up the "snowball" mic by Blue microphones:

http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Snowball-Microphone-Headphones/dp/B003LRXXVM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1368759566&sr=8-2&keywords=snow+ball+mic

Comes with a stand, pop filter, headphones, and of course the mic. These things are awesome, with fantastic voice recording quality.

That one looks nice, thanks writer. Going to be a bit longer then I thought to get one (bills must comes first after all), but I'll keep this on the list for once I get to that. If nothing else it's better then the junky quick grab I looked over at walmart XD

Always happy to help. I used to do some podcast work with an old friend of mine in '09, so I kinda quickly learned about some good mics here and there. That one got big in the Machinima community before focuses shifted and the like.

A really nice microphone that I picked up was the Autio-Technica AT2020 USB microphone.

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B001AS6OYC

  • $100 right on budget
Directional (I place mine right above my keyboard, but it picks up my voice much more than my keyboard)
    Comes with a nifty stand
    Awesome build quality
Completely plug-and-play (it didn't even come with an optional disk with shitty software!)
Note it has a blue LED when running (if you don't like blue LEDs)
There's a PLUS+ version that comes with on-board mic gain and other things

Honestly I love this microphone. I was about to get the snowball mentioned above, but double check before you buy it. It gets glowing reviews, but evidently has a low sensitivity (mic gain.)

I used to be a headset with microphone guy but recently realized that generally headsets with mics are really bad quality. I'm much happier with nice surround sound headphones and a desktop microphone.

Bose has some nice headphones, but this thread is not about headphones. Anyways, I love that audio-technica mic.
