I'm not sure it'd be worth the additional PR fallout from such a move. I don't think people would see it as trying to be competitive, but rather Microsoft previously trying to gouge people.
Well I can't actually see it happening myself seeing as the extra $100 is the price of the bundled Kinect.Still one can hope

Here's a bet: There will be a price drop within 6 months of launch.

I'm still not getting one at launch. If they drop the price, and depending on the games line up I might later on. Which is a step up from my previous "I will never buy it" position.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games. After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today. There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.

It still costs 100$ more and this decisions should've been there to start with. It's a start at least.
Um a 360 would mean they did a complete circle. That they started at DRM, turn and left it, and now are back to it again. I think what you want is 180.

Ah, well, ain't that a breath of fresh air?
Still pretty pricey though, and I already invested in PC now after being a lifelong console gamer, so...
But still, good on you, Xbox! Sort of...

Uh... Exactly? They started with current DRM, went more extreme, and now are back.

I still feel as if the damage is done, however. Sure, now it'll be enjoyable to play, but this PR Stunt right from the get-go is going to hurt launch sales, and many retailers are still going to hold a grudge against the XBone (I will never stop calling it that).

Good for Microsoft, but it's a little too late.

Not trusting it, if all it takes is a patch, then what's to stop them reactivating it a year or two down the track.

What idiots. They should have seen the outrage coming for miles and scrapped these nasty DRM policies from the beginning. Now they've basically killed their own hype, people are going to be wary of the policies returning at a later date or in some other, inconspicuous form. And I bet a lot of people won't have heard of these new policy changes and will still refuse to buy an xbone on the false assumption that it'll still block used games. Microsoft fucked up badly.

They got rid of Family Sharing? Oh no! Now how will I be able to share my games with only ten people instead of as many as I please?

same comment as the other thread, but i thought i'd add if it hasn't been said yet, that if it pulled a 360, then nothing about it would change...

OT: failed suicide, tarnished rep, yadda yadda.

Could you share games with people across the world instantly?

I don't like the features that they got rid of to implement the no DRM...

Hmm, I wonder if Sony's presentation at E3 tipped them over...
I'm still taking a wait-and-see approach. Microsoft has demonstrated where THEY want the industry to go.
Lets see if they stick to it.

Except that's not true Don.Games on Demand titles won't launch if you're not connected to Xbox Live and if you get disconnected while playing it kicks you back to the main menu if you haven't reconnected after 10 mins

Not true, if you are having this issue you need to transfer the licenses to your current Xbox. If the licenses are tied to the xbox you are on, you can play your games offline with no issues.

OT: This makes me very happy. I was very disappointed when I found out that I wouldn't be able to play Killer Instinct when it came out because of Microsoft killing my interest in the X1, so now I will likely purchase one.

"Could you share games with people across the world instantly?"

No, you could choose 10 family members, one of whom could access the games library of a main console on any system provided no-one else was playing it. Unless they had some super cloud computing as yet unseen this would presumably involve downloading and installing the game which would have taken a hell of a long time even with decent internet speed. So it was exactly the same as just lending someone an xbox 360 disk you aren't using, but with added inconvenience and restricted to ten people from the same household.

Seriously, how the hell could anyone call this a revolutionary feature with a straight face?

The only way that price is going to go down is if they remove the mandatory Kinect. Which they are very unlikely to do.

It's funny to see Microsoft flailing around though. Best entertainment they've given me since 2009

Glad that the consumers made M$ see sense. However, I can totally see XBONE doing another 360 once the base had been established.

It's funny to consider how this will screw over EA, considering how they said "no online passes" due to XBONE's DRM.

I am still unsure whether the loss of faith is enough to make me buy one. M$ has proven that their bad idea wasn't even thought out properly for implementation.

Time will tell, but I'm still wary of the XBONE, and I certainly don't care for the Kinect, and PS4 is a $100 cheaper anyways.

As for the rest of it, well, 360's app system sucks just as hard as PS3's patcher system, so there's equal footing there.

I'm not sure you know how many degrees there are in a circle.

But that aside, yeah, yay, good on them for not committing product and brand suicide, but I'm steering clear of it anyway because they had the nerve to put that shit in there in the first place. Not to mention some of the games will probably require an arbitrary online connection anyway thanks to "the wonders of cloud computing", and the one feature I thought might have been decent, and which the few people on here wanted the Xbone for - sharing games digitally with a group of people (still not sure if they'd have differentiated between family and friends, but w/e) - will be going as a result, for some reason.

So in the end, it's one hundred dollars more expensive, with a worse value (so far) paid online membership, and from a company that looked pretty willing to trade consumer freedom for publisher favour until they got it through their heads that no-one wanted their system as a result.

EDIT: Although I will give them this, I'm not amongst those who think it's an incentive to get consoles sold and in a year's time they'll reinstate all the crap they had to take out. That'd be like setting fire to your own house.

I live in South Australia and I have family in Queensland and England, it is a lot more convenient for them to download (a lot faster than travelling all that way) the game from our shared library than to post it, not to mention cheaper. If you lend a friend a disk only one person can play it anyway... Plus they said that they don't even have to be family members! I hope they bring this back because I actually like the idea.

I don?t think I?ll buy it, not because of the price, but because of the reason for the extra 100$, Kinect can fuck off, No i do not want my games to use it, No I do not want it watching me, No I don?t want to pay 100$ more for a gimmick that serves no purpose to a core gaming experience!!!!
