Finally, they're cutting off old Live. Like the article said, doing so will allow the entire system to get a huge revamp.

Meh. If this allows for more 360 Live content (Or for the GFWL system to be less evil), I'm up for it. There's barely anyone short of modders who still play on Halo 2 or what have you on Live, and even then they still have XBConnect.

Umm.. am I the only one here who remembers they did this exact same thing something like 5 years ago when they shut down support to all paying XBOX owners in favor of the new XBL for 360 owners instead? They then placated these poor bastards by saying some of their old games would still be playable, but not many, and all the ones they had just bought would have to be rebought along with 360s.

Microsoft are dicks. And they just fucked all their old school customers AGAIN.
...I feel like I just got dumber by reading this. Seriously? You're complaining about them supporting Xbox titles far beyond the console's lifespan and finally doing away with it because this will allow them to bring more and better updates to the Xbox Live framework? Are you just reaching for a reason to be mad at this rather than thinking logically? Or is logic irrelevant.

Also the irony of someone with a Borg avatar calling out Microsoft is not lost on me.
People like to scramble for reasons to hate companies, even if the company has contributed a shitload to gaming in general. If the company's big, there's someone who hates it, even without a logical reason. I must say, I didn't understand his post in any way. He basically said "So, old is being exchanged for new? OMG! THIS IS A HIDEOUS CRIME, NOONE HAS EVER DONE THIS BEFORE, EVER!"

I haven't played an original game online in I can't remember how long, so this really won't affect me personally. My kids still play X1 games from time to time, but since only online play is being removed, not BC, this won't affect them either.

They say it's so they can add new features. I'm not sure I believe that; I don't see how they can't add new features and hide them from X1 games, keeping all their support for the old games. But so be it.

People who do still play Halo 2 are going to be pissed, though. I would hope services like Xfire will continue to be an available option, even if they don't work as well; but it'll royally suck to not have the official support.

Well that is unfortunate, I actually enjoyed playing Halo 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront 2 on XBL with my 360 like two years ago.

Oh well, the circle of life.

"Our first step in this process will be to turn off auto-renewals for those members who only use Xbox Live on a v1 Xbox,"

I'd hate to be the v1 Xbox guy who renewed yesterday. How's that for $50 years subscription for only 2 months of use?

I care on principle alone. You are selling Halo 2 on the marketplace for 1200 points and now you are saying it won't be supported? That is BS. They should be at least offering some type of refund. Not a full refund mind you but something.

Well there goes my argument.

I always said that Microsoft had superior online service because they didn't just abandon all online games like Sony did with the PS2, now it looks like Microsoft is going to follow suit.

So what am I paying $50 a year for exactly? If not to guarantee my ability to play Xbox games online?

I am going to need to seriously rethink my position.
And I am seriously going to need to rethink just how many ways I can question the thought process of the people complaining. Really now, they were never under ANY obligation to keep supporting original Xbox titles beyond the lifespan of it and now that they've decided that 5 years later is time enough suddenly it's a problem? Did you actually read what you were posting before you hit enter? You apparently think waiting 5 years to shut down that service was "just abandonment", and I have no idea how that even works unless you are Methuselah and 5 years is a mere drop in the bucket.

I don't even know why I'm getting mad at this other than the sheer stupidity of it is mindboggling. It's just like when people started getting bent out of shape over the DS not supporting any older game boy titles except for the GBA, or how the DSi got rid of the GBA slot. Hell even though I didn't agree with it I'd say people getting too bent out of shape over Sony doing away with the PS3's backwards compatibility for bullshit reasons falls into this exact same area. Granted they phased it out way too quickly for my tastes, but that is not the case here. Microsoft supported titles for the original Xbox for twice the lifespan of it, there is no reason why anybody should be annoyed by this and if they are I think there are some serious priorities that need to be reconsidered.

Best part is that, rather than talk to the people who are in control of this, i.e. Microsoft, everybody here who's complaining will most likely in fact just continue to complain here rather than be a squeaky wheel to someone who can actually grease it, and that more than anything is what irks me.

I have a friend who works in a separate division at MS, and there are a few considerations to do this.

One is cost related, the money being paid to keep legacy systems running vs. the income those services bring in.

Another is the ability to surpass some of the limitations of the old XBL system. Like someone else mentioned there is the Friends list limitation. Also, with the release of MAG, MS has a need to show they can do massive Multi-player game as well, and supporting Legacy XBL prevents that.

Not sure how much of what he says should be taken as fact, but I have some trust in him about it.

No no no, you're missing the point. What I'm saying is that this isn't news at all. Microsoft already abandoned original XBOX games 5 years ago. I've seen that not a single person in the thread (at the time of my original post) didn't give two shits about this once and for all drop of Classic XBOX game support either.

Besides, everyone knows that Bill Gates is the Borg Queen anyway.

Well it would seem that of the XBLers on this thread, only a few are outraged by the drop.

If that is the case, then maybe Microsoft has the right idea for dropping support.
