and also, EA has stated that Activision is dropping out Call of Duty franchise!

..so why would Wii U's release mean that Sony or Microsoft have to drop out?

Scare tactics. Microsoft will release an XBOX 720. Sony will release a PS4. And the world will keep turning.
Plus Sony is a hardware company, first and foremost. For them at least, this is incredibly unlikely. In any case, it's ridiculous on both sides since the next generation of consoles are pretty much guaranteed to make billions on both sides...

Unlikely, more likely that Sony will wait a few more years to bring out the PS4. MS needs to bring out a new system and Nintendo is toke'n to many shrooms.

Next...

"That will be the big news at E3,"
Why would they announce something like that?
We are GIVING up... <= sounds like stellar PR!
Even if they are giving up, they will say "Insert Current console name was always meant to be in production for 12 years! So that means no news on the next one!".

And even *if* there'd be no interest in a new gen by the companies current boss, that douche will leave as soon as he realises he'll get a few bazillion bucks just for that. Then there's a new top dog, with a new view. I'm sure Steve Ballmers replacement will LOVE a new console to go with his visionary Kinect IV!

In other news zune says apple will drop from the mp3 market 8p
I couldn't agree more, this is like N-Gage's creator coming out and saying the handheld gaming market is dead and either Nintendo or Sony will drop out... or offer new systems with commercials.

Gaikai have a point, but such a thing won't happen for perhaps another 2 console generations. By that time, Microsoft and Sony may develop their own cloud service and leverage their substantial weight in the market to easily get licenses for more or less every game Gaikai and OnLive will have to fight tooth and nail for.

If it was OnLive saying this i might not laugh as hard but seriously this comming from a company that isnt even off its feet is just stupid

though cloud gaming could infact reduce piracy by offering some gameplay that we can play without downloads

I could see Microsoft stepping down, or making a console that's more like a computer. Most Xbox games of note are on the PC too anyways. Sony definitely isn't going to get out of the race, but they don't really need to have an answer for the Wii-U anyways since the Wii-U is pretty much just Nintendo getting the Wii on par with the PS3. Asking for a next gen console from Sony now is like saying, "Nintendo has caught up with the PS3, how are you going to pull ahead now ?"

As for cloud gaming, even if it's the future of gaming it's certainly not going to be ushered in by some noname company trying to help LG sell TVs.

So their entire logic is Nintendo have made a console so the others won't...yeah that's concrete reasoning right there /sarcasm.

I can see Sony sticking with the PS3 a bit longer. The BluRay and slightly higher-spec than the 360 mean it could last a bit longer. Saying that, the current consoles are so old now that they've been stifling games development for years. Won't deny there have been some nice looking titles recently (Skyrim for one), and perhaps forcing devs to come up with clever ways to make things look and play better, rather than simply adding more polygons is a good idea. But this generation is too old now.

If one of MS/Sony don't bother to develop new hardware, the other will quite simply leave them for dust. The majority of people do not need or want "cloud" gaming. While it may be good for combating piracy, it can never compete with having local hardware, never. People like owning their own console and having a games collection.

Yeah right, I don't see that happening in the UK any time soon. Most people here have atrocious Internet as BT or Virgin won't run proper cables in most areas making the average user stuck with less than 3 Meg down. How can both me and my boyfriend stream games over that sort of connection?

I am sick of them sending me leaflets about buying Infinity or Virgin's cable Internet when both companies refuse to ever lay cables where I am when I contacted them (and I live in a city) saying it would not be profitable for them... Two streets away has cable Internet though, hmmm.

Yeah we still have copper wiring in places in Cumbria. The physical internet infrastructure in the UK is horrible.

Y'know, if I had a dollar for every idiot who came out of the woodwork predicting that Sony or Nintendo or whoever should just give up making consoles...

Honestly, ever since Michael Pachter got a show on GT, it's like every industry moron thinks they can predict the future.

hasnt microsfot sort of gave up apready with that outdated egssbox 3.60 they keep selling? and PS3 can do way more than utilized atm, they dont need new console, they need games that use all consoles power (which wont happen because programmers wont do two seperate games for each console, and xbox cant run PS3 power)

The BluRay and slightly higher-spec than the 360 mean it could last a bit longer.
Oh, please, PS3 can run double the power of eggsbox.
and nintendo always make money. if you sell shit for money its pure profit. and they keep doing that for the past, what, 10 years?
cloud gaming already exist. though very limited library of games. probably because publishers dont want to try new things since we all know they are mostly stuck in the 19th century trade models anyway.
the biggest problem with cloud gaming however is the damn internet providers being greedy bastards and not laying down fiberoptioc everywhere like it should. im glad im on an ISP that has the msot fiberoptics in my whole country and they pretty much put it in my house free of charge becuase they simply were "updating the outdated metal cables". then again, i live in country rated 3rd fastest internet in the world.
well, i forgot what i wanted to say.

What's with this cloud computing gaming nonsense?

If you play fighting games at a high skill level, you'll know that the wireless controllers add too much latency to remain competitive.

I can't imagine that the latency added by the wireless controllers is even a fifth of that added by a professional grade fiber or T3 connection.. let alone the super discount nonsense that you'll find in residential internet.

Then you have to add on the overhead and lack of consistency from shared computer resources on the other end.

I don't see how cloud based computing would offer any advantage over local computing for anything other than turn-based games.
