Why all the hate for this? If it's successfully implemented (which I doubt it will be) then this thing would be absolutely awesome for immersion.
Immersion yes, awareness of anything else such as fires and things, no. Also, it's stupid. That idea died in the 90s.

CALM DOWN PEOPLE, there is no definite thing about whether this will work or not. Even then, people have pattened shit before only to never have it actually be made.

For all we know they could just be experimenting with the idea.

Well, it's basically a VR helment from the looks of it. This won't prevent someone bumping into things in their living room if it was used with Kinect though. You'd need to keep the player still for 3D movemnt in physical space to work in a VR game.

What I'd want more than that is a Helmet-Mounted HUD, so all of the diagrams and minimaps and ammo counters would be part of your helmet, while the actual game part of the game is on the TV.
One problem: The game is on a stationary 2D display regardless. You'll need that to follow you as well.

The people who love to throw around the term "console tard" are going to have a field day with this.
Because its sadly true in this case.

------------

Time to pull out the quote of "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it" is coming full circle. Why did the virtual boy fail? Because it caused eye-strain, was not mobile as a mobile platform and was a overall pain to play with.

There was another one that looked exactly like this. It was, in theory, supposed to allow you to look either left or right and see more of the game on either side for both the Genesis and Super Nintendo. It didn't work well and was a pain to set up, with some very confusing instructions. It also caused eye-strain.

As a whole, Virtual Reality died for a reason, and that was because people like to keep their eyes.

Because hating the consoles for being consoles is the in thing to do, gosh! Get with the times!

OT, might be interesting if done right and made interesting to look at. Sleek and whatnot.

How can they patent an idea like this? Just how can they be stupid enough to think that they can get away with patenting an idea like this?

I remember mock-ups of the VR devices of the 'future' appearing in gaming magazines in the early nineties. They included helmets that looked just as silly and ridiculous as this one, not to mention an enormous joy-stick device stuck to the poor model's groin. There are certainly technologies if developed that would make the idea feasible to market, but the idea itself?

Aren't they a couple of decades too late to claim that they thought of a gaming helmet first?

I reckon it's fake. Microsoft can be stupid but they're not this stupid.
