If you think about it, Microsoft is competing with just about every major technological front there is; and much like the console wars you could say Microsoft is trying to one up just about everyone
Examples:
I find this to be interesting is all, Microsoft trying to take over certain markets (while both failing and succeeding)
They are trying but they are mostly failing.
IE may compete with Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome but all of them are better than IE. I'm fairly sure the only reason 95% of people use IE is because it comes bundled with their machines.
Bing isn't up against Google, no one is. The only thing Bing is up against is the 100s of other search engines that you have never heard of.
Zune isn't competing with anyone until it has a cellphone and GPS built into it. It might have competed if MSFT didn't screw all the 1st and 2nd gen buyers out of all their music when MSFT parted ways with their music subscription provider.
Windows Vista/7 is only really competing against XP. People who buy Macs or use Linux are not going to switch (and it looks like most people who use XP aren't either)
360 is pretty much their only win. Even with the RROD, it will continue to dominate the PS3. I refuse to compare it to the Wii because the Wii isn't aimed at the same market.
I will add that Live is competing with Steam but Steam would win easily if it was available on consoles as well. I would dump Live in a heartbeat if I could have Steam on my 360 instead and I know I'm not alone.
To be honest, I think MSFT is mainly competing with themselves and often shooting their own foot.
