I have it seems pretty slow but that may be there are too many players playing it
Not apart of the equation at all. Minecraft isnt an online game unless you join a server. It only asks you to log in at the beginning just to prevent piracy and to make sure your running a legitimate copy of the game.
1.8 is just buggy, it would have been released earlier today if it wasnt leaked, they just didnt anticipate this many bugs. The lag people are suffering from is coming from specific configurations. 1.8 actually runs much better for me personally then 1.7.3, which is why I am still playing the leak despite having massive gamebreaking bugs like the furnace crashing every time I use it.
This is just saving time later so you don't have to have versions 1.8.1 through to 1.8.9. That would also lower the chances of them having to postpone the November 18th release date. 1.8 is still pretty broken, I mean the leak doesnt even include everything that it was supposed to, like NPCs. I dont even want to know what AI problems they have currently.
A lot of people are on the side of independent developers, yet when they run into very understandable problems they turn their back on them entirely. There are some that are constantly whining about Notch ruining Minecraft's development and that someone else should be designing it. It's particularly annoying since almost the vast majority of it's players have no clue how the game works and how much manpower went into it.
