Thats weird, I swear I quoted the other guy, the one that was bored. And now if I go back in and edit my post, he won't know I quoted him. Dang it, I hate it when I do something like that! Sorry man.
Ah, that's alright.

I got horrendously confused when you were like "Maybe it's just not for you" because I was like "Minecraft is great as it is".

It was kinda like "SayWHA?"

It wouldn't be called "Minecraft", for sure. The blocks are the distinguishing factor of Minecraft from, say, Dwarf Fortress or TES Construction Set.

Maybe they can make it look similar to 3D Dot Game Heroes.

That way you can keep the blocky visual style and game mechanics, while giving it a visual makeover.

Well, in terms of building you have a good example in here. Give the ability to the community to build assets and I believe that it is as good as Minecraft.

I think you're alone in thinking better graphics and removing the block aesthetic will improve minecraft.
In the meantime, I reccommend you download this mod for minecraft - it's a 64x64 texture pack.

I see your 64X64 texture pack, and raise you a 256X256

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1021&t=67932

But ti kinda takes the charm away from the game, but if your into graphics, go ahead
*mini-orgasms*
That's very impressive. But I too find the 32x32 original darn charming, that's what I play on.

I'm going to have to download that 256[sup]2[/sup] just to see what it's like though.

"I do believe that one day some company will pickup most of Minecraft's mechanics and aplly them with a more visually "normal" game since that visual boost may be enough to make the people that bougth Minecraft consider buying another game that is similar to what they already have."

Are you condoning shameless cash-ins?

There's no point, and having everything measured in cubes gives a simple sense of scale that's easy to plan builds with.
Its not that I want to, but do I see it happening? Well... yes.

The only thing I want (aside from the occasional new element to keep things fresh) is the ability to craft inclines and half-blocks, just to make player built structures stand out a bit more (and to make traps more viable with the inclines).

Minecraft isn't even finished development yet. How can you critisize it when the developer is adding things every day, I can respect an opinion but by the time it's finished it might be a more challenge oriented game.

Yeah, some company would be soulless enough to do something like that. But nobody would buy it because Minecraft without cube graphics would be shit.

I really prefer Minecraft the way it is as it showed that graphics can be put aside for what is a good idea that is implemented well and is fun based on the game play. Also the idea of realistic gravity and physics would totally suck as people do like to have structures that float and purposely defies gravity because it looks way more awesome.

I think the cubes really give Minecraft it's character. Minecraft is a very simple thing that manages to capture the attention of millions of people, and it's done this without fancy graphics or comprehensive physics engines. Texture packs and mods are great for those who want them, but I'm just fine with my cube-based world.

On the one hand, yes, I think it will probably happen at some point. "The future" leaves quite a bit of time for something like that to be developed. You can see some destructable environment games already going in that direction (take a look at Miner Wars for instance).

On the other hand, the simplistic, cuboid nature of Minecraft is a central part of the game. It really wouldn't be the same game at all without that. Currently, it's pretty easy to build something neat because you have so few things to build with. If you added much complexity, I think it would be daunting to plan and build things.

I actually think that would ruin the game. It would lose all charm, all the simplistic brilliance Minecraft if it had "Normal game graphics". It would be like Halo 3 forge mode...

Well, the graphics are actually fairly sophisticated for what they actually do. My point being that things are cubular and blockish on purpose. It's not really meant to compete with super duper high end graphics from the future as much as give it a style of its own.

I kinda like the blockishness tbh.
