Minecraft broke my laptop

One day I decided I wanted to blow up a large square of TNT to roughen up some flat terrain. I set off the TNT, and the laptop started slowing down and heating up. Eventually I realised that I would never see the end of the explosion so I closed the game, deleted the world and started over.

The next day, I tried to turn on the PC. It took about 5 minutes to get to the logon screen, and after typing in my password, the computer crashed. Now it's being repaired by my tech store, and I've got to share a personal computer with my sister. Hell.

Back in the late 80s era of computing there were processes called "killer pokes" that would physically destroy your computer. After the early 90s ended we thought we saw the end of them. We did not.

I'm going to get chewed out by everyone here saying that I should have known that it was going to annihilate my computer. Yes. Yes I should have. But the thing is, my computer should have recognised the process that was taking up more processing power than the computer could provide, and should have halted the process.

Don't tell me it can't be done. If a computer can't recognise when it's being killed, it's completely useless.

You're either unlucky or have a very bad laptop.

My laptop is fairly average in specs and I completely beat the shit out of it. It's on 24/7, most games I play can't handle it. It overheats every time I use it and it revs like crazy. On atleast 10 occasions it's lost power because it was so overheated. That's why I only buy HP products. I know they go hard and I don't trust any other brand. Although I suspect it won't last too much longer.

A little more on topic: I've noticed Minecraft doesn't run as good lately, unless it's just me. Even with no mods it's laggy and overheats my lappy twice as fast.

What brand/specs you got?

To be specific, you're saying Minecraft caused your computer to overheat and damage your CPU/mobo's CPU socket? If so, Minecraft, specifically, is not the thing to blame here. Assuming it was totally Minecraft that caused this problem, then it's really a problem with the JVM's accessing/appropriation of hardware.

But really, sounds like a bunk mobo/BIOS; my BIOS shuts off my CPU at 99C and just about every BIOS ever does this as well :\

EDIT: Also, I never heard of "killer pokes" before, but according to wikipedia these mostly just deal with damaging certain I/O devices. A "CPU" would be very difficult to damage (aside from overheating); impossible, perhaps, using only Java.

Laptops are hit by heat the hardest, so make sure your lappy is well ventilated. That means to let it breath behind, to the sides and beneath while running. What with laptops being smaller (More compact), and less powerful, they are required to work harder to get the job done than a desktop, and heat is the enemy. When I built my HTPC, I built it inside an NES chassis, and installed Core Temp to keep an eye on the system temperature. I got the link to the Download.com page, if you're so inclined:

I have an Asus EEE. It's a really portable Laptop (borderline Netbook) and I've overloaded it multiple times, being used to my more powerful desktop, but not once has it done more than turn off. I'm guessing something happened to your laptop's automatic shutdown at whatever amount of degrees.

Yeah, I was gonna say that my computer's overheated a few times, but it just shut itself off with a generic "Do you want to start in safe mode" screen and no further problems. Seems like there would be a mechanical fault if a game - one that I assume ran fine otherwise - suddenly creates an Easy Bake of the inside of your system.

Pretty much this. Or you had the vents covered. It shouldn't have gotten hot enough to cause hardware problems, even if you had a big enough in-game explosion to crash Minecraft.

Oh yeah, with 1.8 my RAM usage went from 500mb to 800mb ingame. Notch just has a knack for being a really shitty programmer, he makes good results but in a really bad way.

Sounds like you were just unlucky, although I have had something similar. My laptops graphics card died and it turns out 3 years of hard use combined with the cooling systems being smothered with fluff is a bad thing.
