Minecraft.

You either love it, or hate it, and that's fair enough. Not everyone has to enjoy the same things.

But I for one enjoy it. I love the crafting, I love the exploration but mostly, I find myself enjoying the Scenery...

To me it's one of the more interesting aspects of the game, which is surprising (at least it was to me) considering it's made entirely of cubes.

I recently went into the game to see what the latest bunch of updates were about, like most people I wager, I'd noticed the 'seed' thing.

Granted, the modding community already knows that the seed thing was around before the patch...
But for the less-informed among us, the 'seed' number/word determines how the world will be generated.

One phrase or number combination will give you a frozen wasteland while another will give you something that looks something like this:

It looks like some gigantic creature died and became part of the landscape...
To the right of that was a cluster of floating islands.

What I thought would be fun, is to have an Escapist show-case/discussion about the Scenery of Minecraft.

They have something similar over at the actual Minecraft forums, which is more of a catalogue of 'seed words'.

I lack the link as I'm not on my usual PC, but it's worth a look if you're a Minecraft enthusiast.

So with that I say, have at!
I look forward to seeing everyone's examples of Minecraftian natural architecture!

In case anyone's interested, the phrase I typed in for that mountainous world was found on the Minecraft forums and it was... '2 girls 1 cup'.

I'm honestly not joking.

Why would you EVER click on something named ''2 girls 1 cup''?

It is not good.
OT: Gotta love Minecraft.
Prettier than most high graphic games.

I'd enjoy the scenery too, if nineteen times out of twenty it wasn't the same boring hills. While seeds are a small small step in the direction, they really need to put in a proper set of worldgen options.

Normally I'd be more than inclined to agree as it's a rule I also live by.
But in this instance, it came out with pleasing results.

Like I said, if you browse the official Minecraft forums you'll see a wide variety of different worlds that the players have come across, each seed word generates the same word every time you use it. Only the spawn point in that world changes.

Put the forum list and the game together you end up with a sure-fire way to end up with the world you want.

My favourite seed so far is "fly". It generates a ginormagantuan canyon with mountains that reach far beyond the clouds. Give it a try!

Why was the paradise world removed, the only that was just a floating island.

And not have ice right next to sand...
aThe game made little sense having adesert next to a damn glacier.
Yeah, the biome setup is nonsensical in aspects of an indefinite randomly generated world. Perhaps if it looped at some point it would allow for more sensible distribution.

Or if it did like Dwarf Fortress and just create smaller localized areas within broader areas within a contained space. Which would also have the benefit of making exploration meaningful. Sightseeing is fine, but with an unlimited worldspace the effort is rather wasted in walking far from the spawn.

I love the scenery too - given a good texture pack and a nice sunrise/sunset, it can actually be breathtaking. This is a shot I took from my balcony on the Escapecraft server:

You know, I don't like playing MMORPGs with small character and class customization because you frequently run into clones of yourself. It tends to ruin the uniqueness of your character.

Which is a fair point, if a bit unrelated to the topic...
If you're against the idea of using other peoples seed words then make up your own word until you end up with a world you like?

Or if you're as against Minecraft as you seem to be, take the time to think about if it's really worth playing?

It's really just that I can't help but hold it up to Dwarf Fortress, and the unreasonably high set of standards that game has shaped on me.

That's fair enough, I've heard some good things about Dwarf Fortress.
Funnily enough from the same friend that introduced me to Minecraft.

Is that open to anyone or is it exclusive in some way? If the latter, how do I make myself applicable?

The server? Anyone's welcome, we have a User Group [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/EscapeCraft]. You can find the link to our forums there.

Though it's being kept at version 1.2 until we have either a stable Bukkit or hMod, so if you updated you'll have to wait a while. Unless you have a pre-1.3 backup of course. :)
