Hacker group Lulzsec followed their massive porn site login dump and successful attacks against numerous game companies, by turning its sights to other gaming websites. Today, the group claimed responsibility for bringing down EVE Online, Minecraft?s login server, and The Escapist website. As of writing, EVE Online and The Escapist?s sites are still down, but Minecraft seems to have recovered. However, some of the groups Tweets seem to indicate that the damage may not be immediately apparent on the site.

There is currently no word if any user information as affected by the intrusions.

The DDOS attacks on these gaming sites were apparently motivated not by spite, but by request. As part of an event they?ve dubbed #TitanicTakeoverTuesday, the group is taking requests by Twitter and by phone. When the number is called, a speaker with a faux French accent using the name ?Pierre Dubois? makes veiled reference to the groups Internet shenanigans.

Lulzsec first rose to prominence some weeks ago after posting a fictitious article to the PBS website and otherwise defacing the site.

UPDATE: Lulzsec now claims that the League of Legends login server has been taken down.

-----

I understand the gaming sites but why The Escapist? For the Lulz yes but why was this site targeted so early on? Minecraft and Eve online are obvious (and as some commenter said in the source thread - why not hit WOW?)

Edit: Mods closed the wrong (dupe) thread, here is a link from Eve confirming an attack.

I think by now the Feds have a decent idea of who they are. It's just a matter of making a case.

You can't hide on the internet

You can if you know what you're doing. The people they catch will be the inept people.

Well at least the escapist is back up (unless it's actually not, in which case where the hell am I typing this?)

I am kind of annoyed by the hacking, but at least nothing too bad has happened yet.

Personally I think the feds are just getting info on them one by one and waiting till they have a whole bunch of cases lined up, since if they'd legit arrest a few important people, the rest would 'go into hiding', so it's more convenient to have all the cases lined up in advance :)

Or maybe I'm just being overly positive...

But yeah I just don't buy that people with a phone line, a twitter account, several websites and just this much notoriety can stay anonymous, so I'm hoping I'm right :p

Its not like I don't appreciate the effort, but i'm pretty sure the escapist has been locking threads about this, so i'd post it somewhere else dude.

DDOSing is for... well I won't say what I really think on the Escapist, but DDOSers are poor substitutes for human beings.

Well that was a BIG mistake my friend.
but everyone makes mistakes.

includeing dumb hackers...
I agree. The cardinal rule for committing acts like hacking or thieving is never, ever, EVER brag about it. Otherwise, you're just begging to get caught.

They're loosely organised teenagers who are trying to accomplish something by doing very little. Nothing to worry or fret about; just ignore them and they'll go away.

All these 'hacker gangs' are essentially wasps at a picnic. If you make a big fuss and wave your arms around, you're probably going to get stung but if you act indifferent and basically don't give a shit, you'll be fine.

Why would they lock the threads?

I rather ask: Why bother giving these hackers more publicity by banging on about their childish antics?

Yes, Im aware of the hypocriscy in posting just to say that.

The question I want to put forward is - Why these sites where there is some element that supports the ideals of Anonymous - I know Lulzsec isn't Anonymous, but everything will be directed to them because of this groups actions (via public opinion and govt. retaliation)

Other than the lulz it seems rather self-defeating to go after sites that would only serve to further isolate this group. If indeed it were a battle of ideals (which it can be argued it could have started as) they have gone into menacing their fellow users.

We really need to stop making these threads. The more we talk about them the more they will act up. Things aren't as lulzy when no one cares.
