Minecraft Help.

Long story short, I struck gold (literaly) and tried hitting it with my pickaxe, but it took forever to break, and I found I couldn't collect it. So how AM I supposed to collect gold?

You weren't using a good enough pickaxe. You need at least an iron pickaxe in order to collect it.

Alright cool, now I just need to figure out how to smelt iron.

Build a furnace, then put the iron ore in the top and something flammable (wood, coal, etc.) in the bottom. Wait. Iron. =)

I believe a beginners guide is posted above. Trust me on this, you will not get far in Minecraft without the Wiki. I'm hoping soon something will be implemented, like it recording all crafting recipes you discover. Or maybe something like Terraria, where if you show a material to an NPC, he'll tell you what you can make with it, and what other stuff you need to make it. Both might be in need for Minecraft, since in Terraria you only need the items in your inventory, and be near a bench.

Well hot damn, I've been playing minecraft for a long time and this is the first I'm discovering that you can make coal from wood? Not that it's an issue now since I've got more coal that I know what to do with, but early on that would be helpful especially in some of the spawn locations that don't have exposed rock or caves nearby.
