I was just thinking it'd be nice to have a thread where we can all share our tips and tricks that we've learnt in minecraft over the year, be it useful buildings, or smart ideas.

My thought is, if you want to go adventuring and have the resources, build a huge lighthouse, with a block of lava as the very top, surrounded by glass. It's a great marker for your town/city/death fortress and it doesn't look like crap.

I know I don't have many ideas, but I'm sure everyone has their own little things they can add.

Try to craft a bow and some arrows early on until you get better armor. Creepers aren't as intimidating if you can just shoot them from a distance.

BACK UP YOUR FILES! Don't make the same mistake I did. I just had my thrid world deleted, and I don't even care anymore... *SIGH*

All well.

Other than that, look into sky bases. If you can get off the ground, nothing can really follow you.

My rule of thumb when I start a new world

1st. Us a block of sand to mark my spawn
2nd. Build a house on top of the spawn.
3rd. Build a Mob Harvesting Tower about 25+ blocks away from my spawn

That way if you die, you spawn in your house (not so big a deal now with beds, but still helpful early on)

The mob harvesting tower is just something that's needed to run an efficient world, seeing as how once you build a few floors you'll never be at a loss for Sulfur or Arrows.

I have to ask, but how can you get monster spawning block, they always break for me.

You don't. You can't mine a monster spawn without destroying it.

Damn these newer patches. I remember that it was possible, but it spawned pigs after you mined it.

Silly. You can't climb in holes. Other than that, this is my strategy every time.

*sob*
Fall into hole?
Mine too, at least for the first night.

Usually, when I make a new world or go to a new server, I usually just harvest and build crazy stuff... But once I was feeling adventurous so I decided to make a new world where i would just pick one direction from my spawn point and walk indefinitely. I didn't want to turn the peaceful mode on but I didn't what to get killed by mobs in the first 15 minutes (the amount of time 1 day lasts). So I found the first sheep that I could and made a bed. whenever I traveled a long distance (and day was falling) I could simply use the bed... And Wow, did I see a whole lot of things, if you are the type that is interested on the certain formations that the terrain generator randomly but awesomely makes, I would recommend this... Although you could turn on peaceful mode, but that sort of takes away the fun of exploring caves (at least for me anyways).

Also that and... never dig straight down... EVER. Even if your standing on diamond ore, DON'T DO IT!

Get trees
Make tools
Build house
Get bored

Those are my rules of thumb. I have a few thumbs.

Always have a plan on building something. If you play Minecraft without any idea what to build, you probably won't be long for it right then.

If you have an idea as to what you want to build, then go for it.

When you get the resources, craft a compass. It's very easy to get turned around when exploring far from your base and it always points to your spawn point.

Really, the best tip is to make sure your fortress is fortified, but make sure your happy with it. For instance, my base is built above a waterfall with a cave behind it, I've dug this cave out so that it goes for ages, with loads of waterfalls inside creating a river. The outside area is surrounded with a system of bridges, one is attached to a massively long mine track.

It's never been possible to collect a monster spawner to my knowledge. It is possible to obtain one and place one if you use an inventory editor, though, and it does indeed simply spawn pigs if you do so.

You can't. However, understand that Mobs spawn no closer than 25 blocks away from the player in light below level 7 (torches create light level 14, sunlight is 15,).

What you basically do is build a tower 25 blocks away, with multiple floors that are totally enclosed, with no light. That way, monsters will spawn in those floors since it's pitch black inside. And then what you do is build water channels in the tower that carry the mobs into a lava grinder, which kills the mobs, then under the grinder, you have another water channel that carries their drops to you at a remote location.

Here is a very handy video guide.
