Specifically, they'll act as pets when tamed with bones, follow you around and will attack anything you attack. They won't despawn when tamed, are attracted to raw meat, and you can tame more than one.

Subject to revision.

Wolf packs vs. Creepers, anyone? Hilarious/Heroic stories of a man and his dog facing the apocalyptic cube world together? I'm excited!

This might be a trend for single-player games; "Lonely? Just add dog!"
Fable 2 and 3, Dragon age: origins, (well, possible dog party member) Fallouts 1, 2, and 3, (good ol' dogmeat) and dead to rights come to mind.

It does get pretty lonely in single player. To be honest, if they want to make the game feel more lively they should add actual humans. For e.g. you would just wander around and find a village. You could trade there, buy tools etc. You could either help them or destroy their village and enslave them so they end up guarding your castle or maybe just keeping them in dungeons and asking for a ransom from the local lord. There are just so many ideas that could be added to the game it's insane. It's getting there though.

Yes, yes and YES!!

This'll be awesome, I always wanted a companion with me while digging away in those mines.... the question is, can they climb?

I made the mistake of watching this with two girls in the room.

My ears hurt from the AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

Anyways, this looks useful. No more wasting swords on cows and pigs. Notch (I'm using his name in the place of "God") help them if you send them after creepers...

Those things are adorable.

Although now I have another animal to fear. Getting ambushed by hungry wolves will suck.

Those things look small enough to crawl through a 1x1 hole in a wall, and as fast as a spider. Pardon me if I avoid the rush and wet myself now.

YES, DO WANT.

And as soon as this update is released, my grades will plummet.

EDIT: I wonder if they'll attack skeletons whether they're tamed or not. Now THAT'D be amazing foresight on Notch's part.

Ok, I was about to go "Oh, I've been using the Mo Creatures mod, and have wolves, lions, ogres, sharks and dolphins to name half of the extra critters! And you can tame horses as faithful steeds ^_^"

Then I saw the cute little critters, with their 'shake the water of' animation and the 'attack your target' AI - very nice :D Nice to see more functionality and traits being added, hopefully we'll be seeing more by way of minions eventually - the Minecolony mod has some nice ideas, but they've not nailed the implementation.

Now I can rule my own eeeevil hell dimension (The Nether) with eeeevil hell hounds enforcing my eeeevil rule. Or perhaps stop those meddlesome sheep from roaming willy-nilly around my death fortress.
