the short answer is No. sorry. minecraft is nice, but The Best Forever and Ever Amen? come now, don't be silly.

So you're a creative type who prefers making up your own goals and objectives over following quests and campaigns that other people have written? good for you, nothing wrong with that. but not everyone is like that, and their opinions count just as much as yours in the final reckoning of what's better than what.

A recently popular game made by a recently popular company could win a popularity contest, the unadulterated horror of it all.

I seriously can't wait for march madness to be over so people can shut up already, and this is coming from a person who made a bracket for valve to win the contest.

Well I did make a skull mountain with lava pouring out of its face holes. I did build canals for farms and transport. I did build water elevators to my floating sky fortress (to the ladders anyways). I did blow up cows while dressed as Frank Castle. Speaking of which I should make a floating lava spewing skull fortres... as Frank Castle. I am free to build whatever I want instead of being merely satisfied with a game environment.

Is it fun? Only if you don't expect entertainment forced into your brain with a drill.

Is it the best game evarrrr? NO.

Are they good developers? Hell yeah. I pity the future of games if they keep striving to emulate the moronic movie industry. At least Mojang did something original and provided good support for players. Bashing them would be like complaining about a kickass employee at work. Hell, some companies don't even beta test before they shovel glitchy bug infested turds on the shelf so fans can spend a few weeks doing their jobs for them. I refuse to pick bugs out your poo that I paid for.

March Mayhem is more of an innovation award than anything else. People are fickle and always cry foul when something is labeled as generic - oh look a military FPS, Call of Duty clone. Chest high walls? Gears of War clone. Third person combat? God of War clone. Platformer? Mario clone. Everything is a clone of something else.

But not Minecraft. It's a clone of nothing (and don't say Infiniminer, it was never completed and abandoned. Minecraft isn't complete, but it's not going to be abandoned is it?) and the way it succeeded purely through word of mouth is nothing short of phenomenal when you look at all the money put into heavy ad campaigns that feel cheap and fall flat on their face. Looking at you, EA. It's not hard to see why people love Mojang.

It's just the trend really, everything indie devs make is worshiped and lauded even though it's just a copy of an older game not many people know about and everyone thinks this new one is so original, great, inventive, awesome, etc. and that they are the true saviors of gaming and all the big companies are viewed as the evil bastards that spread corruption in the land of gaming with their greed.

I just think people are too much like sheep and I also think that the results of a competition like this are not important and just uninteresting to me, I also believe that people are bitter and just because they don't like something about a company or they hate what they changed about their latest game in their favorite franchise they'll just vote for the opponent just so that that studio doesn't win.

Gmod > Minecraft.

HOWEVER, Minecraft is not a bad game. It has its perks and is really fun in its own way. To answer your question, No, Everyone has their own opinion. Just because someone thinks Minecraft is the best game ever, doesn't make it so.

I actually enjoyed playing Dwarf Fortress; like minecraft, the only goal is to survive and the rest is up to you. BUT, unlike minecraft, Dwarf Fortress has way more stuff to do, more interesting characters to deal with, an AMAZING AI system (possibly rivaling the AI systems of any other game out there), and the worlds are a lot bigger and more expansive and customizable.

Minecraft... allows you to move dirt to another place and create different styles of blocky architecture. And there are these exploding shrubs...

Technically it's not even a "game" according to the official definition. Its a toy like legos.

I play minecraft all the time but what you can create actually is limited compared to roblox (I am the proud owner of a bacon shooting tank with wheels made out of coca-cola cans.)

Also because it's a pc exclusive PC gamers crowd behind it so they can hold it over the console gamers. (you should see the comments when notch announced minecraft for consoles. people were pissed.)

And there's the fact that it's new.

Afaik Notch said it was inspired by Dwarf Fortress. He is planning to make a level importer for DF if Toady lets him. Those games are heavily linked.

My Minecraft is the best game in the world ever, but that's because I'm creative. If yours sucks then you only have yourself to blame.

I enjoy Minecraft...but beating out Elder Scrolls...no

If it had been Elder Scrolls v Minecraft....I would have been hurt...

Also,

Valve lost because everyone is tired of "Where is HL2Ep3?!??!"

Like some said before minecraft is popular now. Since MM is more or less a popularity contest it is no surprise they are winning (although i thought they would loose fast).

Next year something else is popular and will be voted for in high numbers.

Apparently that's what most people here seem to think if the voting is any indication.

Minecraft is better than Mario, Pokemon, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Half Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3/NV, Resident Evil, Team Fortress, Elder Scrolls, Borderlands, The witcher, and oh god I could just go on and on.

Sure you could almost apply this to any dev that's winning or won March Mayhem, but the point here is that they had games. Not some game that is in beta and not even officially released. At least in the end Zynga didn't win last time, here though, it looks like Mojang going to. Can anyone really sit here and tell me it deserves to win more than ANY other developer?
See, some of us are only considering what developers have done in the last year. So let's see...

Mario - don't own a Wii; can't consider that one.
Pokemon - personal dislike of the series
Mass Effect - can only give credit for DLC (but I voted Bioware in any case)
Dragon Age - the reason I voted Bioware
Half Life - N/A
Portal - N/A
L4D - N/A
FO3 NV - didn't play (but I voted Obsidian based on Alpha Protocol)
Resident Evil - N/A
Team Fortress - N/A
Elder Scrolls - N/A
Borderlands - N/A unless you are a Mac gamer
The Witcher - N/A

Can you see why someone might vote for Mojang by this reasoning? Most of the competition either released nothing or released yet another sequel. What non-sequels did Minecraft go up against this year? Enslaved? Pretty much the only real competition for them in my mind this year was Obsidian with Alpha Protocol, and that game is a buggy mess (that is likely never going to get a proper patch).

I think that Mojang earned their place in the competition this year. Next year will be a much more interesting competition, what with, among other games, Skyrim and Portal 2 being in the running.

Better than Bioware, apparently the shadiest company out there. Minecraft is damn sure better than Dragon Age 2 at any rate.

I...

Bu-...

Damnit.

Okay, okay. I'll concede that point, but to my own admission i've not played Dwarf Fortress, nor do i know anything about it. A quick youtube search shows what looks like a dosbox game with ASCII-type art. It doesn't appear to be in 3D and appears to be in a completely different style to Minecraft. While it may have been 'inspired' by Dwarf Fortress, the styles appear to be worlds apart. It's not like for example, Gears of War and Quantum Theory. Both games look so awfully similar that you'd think they were the same game. With the exception of the poor production values for the latter, but still.

This is what i mean by a clone. Inspiration is one thing, but a carbon copy is another.
