Ultima Online has the harshest punishments of any game I've ever played.. Four years of collecting money down the drain. Why did I wear my best gear to a dungeon I'd never been to?

It's not otherwise scary though, so minecraft wins in that sense.

Thief Deadly Shadows.
I have played FEAR and Clive Barkers Undying (Silent Hill is the only 'scary' game I havent played) but Thief 3 takes the cake for scariest game ever. Why? The Shalebridge Cradle. The penultimate level of the game. It was creepy as ****. Lets just say the building in that level used to be an orphanage and an insane asylum. At the same time.
The rest of the game isnt scary, its good, but not scary. That one level.... I want to go play it again now :)

They are colluding...

That was lulz, the game itself can be scary though.

I've taken to punching creepers to death, on hardest difficulty, to give the game more of an exciting atmosphere to it. Minecraft is not frightening in the least; in fact, it rapidly becomes boring.

By the first night I've acquired a diamond pick-axe. By the second I've laid the foundation to my house; by the fifth bread, soup, and cake with steel-diamond (if I'm lucky) armor; I don't kill any animals in the game.

Should I die, I delete the world. So far, I've only deleted one world; courtesy of a creeper shock wave pushing me into lava, to which I was unable to escape or throw down my bucket of water in time.

-Note that I strongly dislike horror games.

As far as punishing games go, Final Fantasy XI Online has got to take the cake. Everything about that game was hard. At early levels (1-18) the majority of starting area monsters could and frequently would kill you at any opportunity they got. Of course if you died, for any reason, you would lose EXP. and/or de-level. The almost every monster would aggro, which is to be expected from any respectable MMORPG. However, in FFXI the monsters don't always aggro just by seeing you. Oh, no the were plenty of monsters that could hear you in order to aggro. Some could even SMELL you. Quests were at best vague about where to go and what to do in order to complete them, sometimes requiring you to go to the opposite end of the world map in order to do so. At least the easy ones did that. Maps had to be purchased from npc's for exorbitant rates. On the plus side, all this, plus much, MUCH more, made FFXI the closest knit MMO I have ever played, with unique features like Auto Translate, which essentially allowed you to play and converse effectively with anyone, regardless of whether you spoke English, French, German, Japanese or what have you. Anyone could and would help anyone, regardless of their level or language. Later on after I played there was a feature called level sync that allowed high level char's to play with low levels.

tl;dr Final Fantasy is the hardest and most rewarding MMORPG I have ever played.

Also it was occasionally pretty scary too.

Minecraft isn't scary at first because you aint got anything on you if you die so you dont lose anything important, may just a few stone equipment but those are easy to get. But when you start making Diamond equipment its suddenly OMG GTF AWAY!!!!

Oh god, the Nether...

The rest of the Minecraft world is nervewracking at times, but not exactly "scary"... but the damn Nether is just... built, literally, from nightmare fuel. You can tell, cause most of it will CATCH FIRE.
The Nether is probably the least scary thing in the game, because the fucking ghasts never shut up!!! It can't be scary when they're constantly mewing and annoying the hell out of me.

Though I will admit it was somewhat freaky when I was walking through my portal tunnel and saw this;

It's actually harmless though since it can't really see me.

Yeah, it's a really scary game. I personally hate zombie sounds, they're scary and disturbing - when they get near my house, they just make these noises over and over.
Yes. They can be very scary if you are not prepared for them. They can get pretty loud if they are close by and you are wearing headphones..
Exactly, headphones. It's the reason i plug my mac to line-in and turn on music - i hate these noises, even now, with iron armor, three stacks of arrows and two spare cakes in fortress.

some mmo's used to have a system that when you died you lost xp.. imagine how scared you were of losing your life when a enemy jumped out at you? you would do anything to not die.. :D
Oh, that's cute. Losing XP is scary? Try the ones (particularly MUDs) where you lose XP and all your equipment/inventory and which have full PK/looting and no safe areas. If you have anything valuable or difficult/time-consuming to get, you will discover an entirely new kind of fear when someone catches you off guard, although it's very rewarding if you manage to stay calm enough to escape, especially if you find whoever it was later and gank them and all their stuff. I got sick of it after a while, though, because stuff like that tends to attract griefers and assholes in general, unfortunately.

Also, funny video.

Yeah, it was scary the first 5 minutes until I found out their loudest screams are when they are dying. I hope he does something with the Pigmen soon, hunting them down for rare mats could be nice, especially since they are dangerous in groups.

I like the parts where the screams seemed to get muffled. It makes you feel the terror.
Yeah, was due to a crappy headset, the clearer ones are with my new headset.

Unfortunately when I first started playing I always had diamond on me, and I always seemed to die. Then when I finally smarted up and was careful to not die, I didn't have enough diamond left :/

Sorry, but Minecraft isn't scary in the slightest. The scary thing is that minecraft is winning awards and is apparently good  its terrible. In a few days a built a large house with underground cave and a swimming pool. Then got extremely bored with the "game". Seen one pile of blocks seen them all.

To hell with Minecraft!!!

To save me time on building any more I just imagine what I want done and turn off my PC and have save 15 life hours.

I agree. Minecraft certainly has that effect on you. Creepers are the worst. You're just sitting there collecting your diamonds and then you turn around and there it is! Just to ruin your day :(
