I broke down and got Minecraft for the wife because she was very interested in it.
Her exact quote "Its like digital LEGOs!"

Anyway I was wondering if there is a definitive site for Minecraft mods?

Before you start with the "use google" smartass remarks, I'm asking for people's opinions on what Mod sites are worth visiting since GOOGLE does NOT give opinions.

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Mods

This is where I go to look for mods. I find it very useful as it contains a description of each mod as well as the compatible versions and if other mods are required.

There are about 20 different Minecraft mod sites now so just browse around.
But make sure you always check what game version the mods are for, except for texture mods nearly all the rest will break on different Minecraft builds, and make sure to back up the main files(just copy paste into another folder) before doing anything.

I can't even remember how many times I broke Minecraft with these, it's all chicken string productions so you need to be careful.

Texture packs are the easiest way to start. Quick to download, easy to install and they can radically change the looks of your builds.

However the first thing you should do is download MCpatcher. It patches the game so it can handle higher definition texture packs. It comes with instructions, real easy to use.

OH and...

SERIOUSLY! Minecraft is notorious for display driver crashing and sometimes can have a pretty bad hissy fit. Back. Up. Your. Saves!

It seems people have already reccomended the major mod sites, so I'll go ahead and reccomend some actual mods:

Better Than Wolves: Adds a million differen tthings- form mechanical power to new tools, to new items. It's a huge mod that easily doubles the amount of content in the game while keeping the 'Minecraft feel.'

Rei's Minimap: The ultimate minimap. It's just awesome.

Zipline: Adds ropes, rope bridges and handlebars. A fun mod. (You'll have to scroll down to get it)

These are some of the better mods out there, if you ask me.

If you want a place to find and see decent demonstrations of mods maybe go check out the YogsCast.
