Okay, I love me some casual minecrafting, lovely activity.
Even though my houses always end up perfectly square and never anything interesting, I still like the game.
So far, I have been playing single player.
But the multiplayer part always interested me.

I just don't have the faintest clue how it works, how to get it to work, what the general purpose is, Is it like Garry's Mod?

Can someone please enlighten me?

How to work it -- each server has an address that you enter into the bar. Enter the address, and you're connected to the server -- the address can be a website URL, an IP address or random numbers.

General purpose -- play Minecraft with others.

It's a lot like GMod, in the fact that it's split into two categories: Building and RP.

Each are self explanitory -- building, just build shit and have fun with other players, but watch out for griefers.

RP, you roleplay -- I don't know anything of it since I never do it.

Well they are owned by people who pay for them so wether they're private yes or no entirely depends on the owner.

If you've found a good one, call me because mine got cancelled.

I haven't actually been on it, but supposedly an escapecraft.net or escapecraft.com try both exists.

You could always try connecting to them. I personally run my own bukkit server for me and my friends.

Escapist did have a server, I went on it a few times. Haven't been on it for quite the while, so dunno whether it's still up. Check the escapecraft usergroup, the server details should be in there.

There's actually a few other catagories. Some multiplayer survival servers let you do as you want. There's a lot of exploring done on those. People find a nice place to build or help others build but some seek adventure and craziness.

Most of the servers I play on are with friends. We essentially play like it's singleplayer co-op. From there, it's whatever we want to do we'll do. Sometimes we just play like it's singleplayer and venture off in all different directs to do what ever. The appeal is in being able to talk to someone while playing and knowing that you're not alone in that infinite world :)

*edit*

Sorry I just noticed you already mentioned that style of play, lol. My fault for not wearing glasses!

I could just log into that server?
Or should I ask permission first?

I'm not a griever, but I'd hate to walk into a server unwelcome.

Nope, just type in "escapecraft.com" and move ahead. We've got a tutorial set up to show you our plugins, and there's always plenty of mods and mentors on to help you and answer questions. We also have a website: http://www.escapecraft.net/

The only problem you might have is actually getting in. We've been unusually full lately...

Question one -- most of the time, you have to look for it on websites that host the server, if not, just ask around.

Second, some are, but of course many aren't. They're not password protected or anything, they just have a list on who can or can't come on.

First question: Yes, the IP is escapecraft.com

Second: No

Last statement: there's likely dozens of new users everyday, they should be used to it.

I went on their server once, but it was so huge and there wasn't enough space for me to build anything for a long distance. Plus, since it's more popular, more griefers.

I'm on the Citycraft build server. Come and visit my house! Chose multiplayer in the Minecraft launcher and put the following into the address field:

ldn25.multiplay.co.uk:1337

The Escapecraft build server is impressive but I found it hard to get into. I might give it another go some day.
