Minecraft "Printer" Builds Objects For You

Building stuff in Minecraft is so passé. All the cool kids are building stuff in Minecraft that can build other stuff for them.

Crafted by Reddit user LaserUnicorn [http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/it8fo/12x12x11_15_color_3d_printer_i_made/], this inventive device is capable of "printing" full-color virtual objects measuring up to 12 blocks in height, 12 blocks in width and 11 blocks in depth. The process is slow and the machine is rather ponderous, but the act of building a virtual device capable of fabricating other virtual devices on-demand is both very impressive and incredibly meta in a very entertaining way.

Further cementing the entertainment value of this project is the mini documentary Mr. Unicorn created to document his creation. I don't know if it's the charming commentary -- What is that accent? Dutch? -- or the way he makes the presumably incredibly difficult, inventive structure sound so pedestrian, but watching that clip is far more fun than you'd have any right to expect.

Additionally, LaserUnicorn has made the thing's map files available for free download [http://manage.goplay.se/3D_Printer_Files.html] for those of you who absolutely must have a virtual fabrication machine of your own.

Remember earlier this week when I covered that Minecraft/Bomberman mashup [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111717-Minecraft-Meets-Bomberman-In-Explosive-New-Mod]? I'm having a lot of trouble deciding which of the two Minecraft projects I prefer.

On the one hand, this machine is an incredibly useful tool, capable of endless creation on a vast scale.

On the other hand, Bomberminecraft lets you explode your friends.

Thoughts?

I love it when people make machines in minecraft. I'm just really keen on the concept of recreating everyday objects within a piece of software. Reminds me of the ALU that one guy made.

On an unrelated note: I can't quite place the guy's accent... Scandinavian perhaps?

Minecraft totally needs the ability to shrink something down once you've made it. Microchips FTW!

I dont really care abot MC but its always impressive to see stuff like this. I cant make that shit irl, never mind a game like MC.

I wondered about the accent to, checked his youtube. Not what I expeted a Swedish person to sound like.
That's what Swedish people actually sound like when they speak English. Well, when they have a thick accent anyway. One of my pet peeves is how the Swedish accent is portrayed in the rest of world - stupid I know, but I'm tired of "Swedish" people sounding Dutch or German on TV.

OP: I'm always amazed by what Minecraft can do!

I think I'm going to have this made on a 3D printer, because, well, we might as well take this meta into meme territory.

:( I prefered the steryotype, I couldnt understand him much with that accent. I agree though the "ya part of it makes me think of Germans. Its odd, thought steryotypical accents had atlest some truth to them. Here it dosent seem similar at all.

I cant belive TV lied to me

OK I was geninuely suprised thats what Swedish sounds like, but I wanted to post that vid too...
In Sweden he is called the Norweigian Chef.

My first thought? Goddamn, this guy has a lot of spare time.
60 hours isn't all that much time in the grand scheme of things.

I wonder if there's a different way to run memory in minecraft. Why does it have to be limited to base 2?

VID SNIPPED

Fun fact(?): Apparently the Swedish Chef was based on an actual Swedish chef who came to visit to the States. He was placed in a kitchen in front of a camera without any instructions beyond "cook!" and so his nervous reaction was to start going through each of his steps in Swedish. He spoke in an accent called "dalmål" which sounds like this:

I don't know how true this is, but it makes for a fun story. Also the German "Ja" and the Swedish "Ja" sound nothing alike. (another pet peeve.)

HE IS?! ... I did not know this. Then again, I don't think I've really watched the Muppets in Swedish.

Sorry for aiding in the derailment folks! Now back to your scheduled Minecraft goodness!

I'll be inpressed once he builds it without a inventory editor. Make him work for it!

Though it's pretty cool already. Now combine it with the cpu and print some microsoft word stuff!

Beat me to it. I'd love to see someone use that 3D printer for Minecraft that was featured a little while ago to print the 3D Printer from within Minecraft.

Sadly, you can't move blocks that have redstone on, so you couldn't :(
Clearly the reverse must be done, then! For science!

The real question is can the machine print itself?
(Yeah I know it can't but I wonder if you could make a self replicating machine in Minecraft.)

This makes me think nothing is impossible with Minecraft. Go for it.
