Minecraft Redstone Problem, MC forums aren't helping.

all I can do with redstone is make my house look like christmas
Ie:lotta lights over my house in a reapeating fashion

Okay so basically set it up like lets say this is your area

[_][ ]
[p][-]

(dashes are the doors and brackets are the blocks they sit on and p is pressure plates. It should work like that) Look at pictures for detail.
