That is terrible. I never do any pranks that permanently destroy or damage something.

Yup, by default games are open. Unfortunately, there are no custom skins (as yet)

You are assigned a skin by the order in which you join the game. I'm always Tennis Steve :(
I just call him Gay Steve, and on occasion, Homo Faggins.
How odd, that's similar to what my friends call him. Even the gay ones.
Anyway if you join third you get a sweet suit.

If you don't want to watch the whole thing watch the first 4 minutes and then skip ahead to about 16:30.

I love that suit, but I usually opt for ghetto Steve.

I'm playing on this server that simulates the apocalypse, with a chat that has a range of only 100 blocks and no rules. As a rule when I play by myself on that server, I never ever build above a height of 40. The server supports 120 players, so you get gangs of 30+ people, all focused on raiding, pillaging and griefing. I have to use Skype to talk to my friends when they visit my base, in fear of someone hearing me. Other bases, entirely or partly above ground, completely destroyed for no reason. They didn't even steal my stuff.
Every now and again when I scour the above world, searching for the few groups of people who protect each other from griefing, I come across abandoned fortresses, castles oozing with lava, some foundations and a broken radio tower. I built my rather large base, now spanning thousands of blocks, directly under the main base of the biggest anti-raid organization on the server, hidden by a door submerged in lava. It's all gone now. It's lonely down there, on a pile of riches but no one to share them with.
That server sounds... Awesome! What's it called/IP address?

It's called Minerapocalypse, the adress is play.minerapocalypse.com. It's also got a reddit page (/r/minerapocalypse), where updates and stuff are posted. Note that you might not find anyone for days on end, a lot of people are hiding.

You can just jump into people's games in Xbox Minecraft? Anyone have a Herobrine skin I could borrow?
Every time you load up your game world you set online or offline status, and whether joins are unrestricted or by invite only. If someone sets their world to unrestricted then they can't complain about getting griefed, quite frankly. That's their own damn fault, not the game's.

OT: I have never been the recipient of Minecraft trolling as I always check the 'Invite Only' box before loading up a game, a habit I share with everyone on my friends list. The surprising thing for me with this story is that there are some people out there who are willing to open up their creations to the GU.

Watched the video on the OP... Made me laugh. I find that kind of banter between mates to generally be quite funny.

Never actually played Minecraft, however the possibility of going through and ruining other peoples works of art intrigues me, I may have to look at it - I have a mate who's big on his minecraft, and destroying hours of his labour would be extremely funny.

This.

I literally do not understand folk who expect people on the internet to be nice. 99.99(recurring)% of people on the Internet become cunts the moment they log on.

The remainder of people being me - and as we've seen above, I also become a **** given the opportunity.

So, really, everyone on the internet is a ****.

That's why minecraft trolling/greifing is one of the worst kinds, in my opinion. In other games, when you get trolled, you find another game online, problem solved. In this, stuff that you may have been creating for hours may be permanently destroyed.

Of course, all the more reason that you set your game to private. Honestly, why would you let other people who you don't know into your world?

I will say this though-minecraft needs to borrow something...from fortresscraft.

In that, people could set their world upon loading so that only they would be able to alter it. Essentially, it's a way that other people could view your world without them being able to destroy it. It'd be ideal.

What's the difference between Trolling and Griefing?

I thought this would be considered griefing. PC gamers been doing it for years, no shock that consoles are being hit too.
Trolling is luring someone into a trap that causes them emotional distress, although usually in verbal/textual form. In this case he lured him into his own boat that made him essentially blow up his own creation. I think that's about as close to trolling as you can get!

There is something disturbingly exciting about destroying someone's creations, probably a long lost emotion from caveman days.

Also, strangely, there is also something satisfying about destroying your own creations! Many a time I have set my own houses on fire, just because, you know, I can!

Griefing has been around since the earliest game, like the dude who would steal the power up in Super Mario Brothers.

---------------------------

Trolling is Griefing and both are just annoying, useless bullshit. Neither takes any forethought and neither are a 'art' or 'craft' because any kid can do it. Also, why did the Mojang team think that a always-online mode in their sand-box game was a good idea?

Griefing would be destroying someone's house. Trolling would be helping someone build their house but secretly replacing some of the blocks with TNT, then once the house is finished setting the TNT off and laughing maniacally. Griefing is just being a dick for the sake of being a dick, trolling is being a dick for the sake of comedy.

Trolling requires more effort, but is a lot more funny when it goes right and is much more interesting.
