(Rolls eyes) All you guys who'd play on hardcore mode are wimps! First time I played Minecraft, I was having great fun until I fell and died. I instantly quit the game and uninstalled it.

It was a hard thing to do, but that's just how I roll.

Not in a million years. Can you imagine if you lost connection or someone came to the door and up pops a creeper?

JESUS! That video surprised me.

I play like this as a self-imposed rule already, so its great to see this supported proper.

Total world destruction not only keeps the game fresh, it makes combat and exploration a bit more nerve wracking, knowing that one wrong move can mean the end of everything.

Its also a great excuse not to be tied to your spawn point, since your spawn point is of little consequence in a hard mode world. This encourages more overland exploration and thus keeps the game more fresh, especially with the new biome system.

It's optional like some other users said. I don't see what the big fuss is all about, it wouldn't take much time off of developing other features.

As long as it's optional, then i think it's a great idea. One of the reasons rogue-likes and such are fun is that death has real meaning, the entire game becomes much more tense and immersive when you know you could lose your character at any time.

Besides which, if its optional then what are the downsides?
it will be optional.

Not the first game to do that. IIRC, some Rougelikes like Nethack will delete your save when you die, as did Steel Battalion, a.k.a.: That Hideously Expensive Mech Game With The Gigantic Controller. Then there's that one Flash Game that can only be played once, and if you die, you only get news reports of your character's death, then just a shot of their grave when you go back to play it unless you delete your cookie.

I think it's a decent idea myself. It's optional, after all, and can encourage more exploration.

Where's the middle ground? I'd like to see something where when you die you don't lose your world, but everything in your inventory disappears for good instead of you being able to go back and pick it up.

Wow, some of the comments in this Thread...and they say Escapist if the last bastion of intellect on the net, hahahahahahahahaha.

They should say "Escapist, last bastion of intelligence FROM the hosts, and last bastion of meh from the posters."

I already have a world slot dedicated to playing like that already.
So far I've only had to delete it twice.
Damn surprise lava.

I already do this.

THAT SAID, I think the change should be that the world goes into "read-only" mode after you die - basically just turn noclip on and remove the player's ability to do anything other than run around looking at the stuff he's done.
That's a really good idea. Also, could be even more cruel. Imagine, a project forever unfinished... All you can do is stare at it, and the crater in the ground where the creeper got you.
Although I'd probably never turn it on, it is a great idea.

As a rule, I turn-down the volume when a video is quiet for too long (if it's one I haven't seen). About 10 years back those "shocker" videos were way too popular for their own good, so I built-up an immunity from too much exposure.

Wouldn't it be cooler if you were thrown in the nether when you died and had to fight your way out to get back or something? Would work well with multiplayer, would be very punishing (might have to be made easier, actually).

The nether could do with a bit more stuff happening, a bit more useful resources, usable resources. You should be able to stay, and survive, find food, find tools, just make it much harder.

And that could work with multiplayer too. If someone dies they go hell-side, and then put in scrying pools, through which they can possess zombies, or other enemies, and if they kill a player, or lots of enemies, or whatever, they can gather the energy needed to travel back to the real world.

After thinking about how many times I fall off cliffs and die, and that one time I was building a volcano and a cow pushed me into it, I'll pass.

Games still in alpha and already the elitists want to ruin it. Notch should be working on adding some new features not just making it harder to suit elitists.
