Awesome review!

I'll be honest, judging from this, we have completely different feelings about the DC Wasteland. I personally hated it. Maybe it's because I'm more of a swords'n'sorcery Oblivion type but the relentless grey and grimness really got to me after a while. Desert orange and blue skies sounds like paradise to me after FO3's endless gloom.
Me too! I knew Fallout 3 was an awesome game, but overall, the DC wastland seemed just so... depressing. However, Fallout New Vegas had blue skies and humor, so no one had to tell me twice to go get it. Though I personally like the DC area more than the Mojave desert... weird.

Just wait until New Vegas gets a load from my super awesome space cowboy! YEEHAW!

Great review. I loved FO3 too and the setting there was perfectly executed. To me the Mojave is a bit less atmospheric, as you said. But I do love the special perks at the begining. I have a question to anyone playing with the wacky wasteland perk on. Has it once activated for you or shown you something different? Cause I don't think it has for me

I disagree about the 'less athmospheric', less 'epic' because the tone is shifted up.

The F3 DC vista was amazing but the whole tone of the game just bugged me to the point where I couldn't swallow the athmosphere. Everything was so clunky and overdramatisized that in fact it had the adverse effect of nothing seeming serious to me. I mean, I think tragedy is best performed on a subtle level and F3 tried to go all out with trumpets and tears.

I mean the icing on the cake was the ending with the gow awful 'save yourself for humanity' bit. It's like these guys never played a Fallout game. I was left not tragically moved, but I actually just laughed and felt dissapoint.

What I'll give F3 was the amazingly perfect 50s simulation, in which you're transformed into the recreated world, which ended up on my alltime 'out of game' holyshit moments in game history (along with the overworld scene in Grim Fandango among others). That was expertly done, haven't found a similar 'whoa' experience in F:NV.

You wanna see tragedy? Here:

I can haz Doctor's bag?

I mean....how can they..how...how can they expect you to shoot these lovable creatures. *sniff* It's just...so unfair, I mean...life's unfair. Look at it. LOOK AT IT! *openly sobs*

Thanks for teaching me about the cruelty of humanity Fallout ;D.

I don't think it 'activates' per se, but a few additional things can happen. For example you can find an alien blaster. That sort of thing.

Swift double take here. What?
Mathew Perry plays Benny, your would-be killer. I'd rather have spent 40 hours chasing Courtney Cox, but oh well.

What pissed me off about the ending of FO3 was not that the game ends after completing the final mission, but that the ending was so atrociously-written and illogical that it felt totally unjustified. If that's not the case in FNV then I'm fine with it.
The endings to New Vegas are logical, epic and amazing. Don't worry!

But this is good news. FO3 was far too easy, even on Very Hard.
Yep. Though I would avoid taking Boone around. He's horribly overpowered, as well as being a grumpy bastard.

I see your point, my preference of the Fallout 3 world is more to do with the aesthetics and landscape though.

I don't care if something is cute and cuddly, as soon as it breathes fire or bites me I'm shooting that demon lizard in the face. the thing I hated the most by far was the Cazadors. annoying stupid evil butterflies. I loved this game though there was one point I was going to snap the game disk in half after I lost 6 hours of game play due to a corrupted save file. and the part in the train tunnel where I couldn't go into a room because apparently it was a trap door straight to hell that sent me back to the beginning of the area. and Ed-E's side quest never worked out for me. Other than that I found the game more challenging(seriously, you should never be able to own a deadclaw unless you're well into the game, I don't care if it makes it "linear") the complexity of the story is what makes this game work despite the moments of extreme frustration caused by bugs and cazadors. I flipping hate those things!

Another great Review, I agree with you on the flaws of the sandbox, I guess the Trade-off for having all these improvements on F3 is Fallout2 enemy-leveling Syndrome.

Also, you didn't mention the bugs.
Damn, thanks for reminding me.
Be warned people, the game has a couple of bugs!

I didn't mind the enemy levelling syndrome to be honest. It was better than pouring 600 bullets into an albino radscorpion!

That was quite possibly the best intro I've ever read. Great job, Miracle.
But at the same time, DAMN YOU!
I already wanted this game, but I have to wait! And now that wait will seem longer!
*twitches*
Any plans for a song? :p

oh not scary. its light hearted. fallout games are NEVER scary and should NOT be scary. its all about the humor and absurdity, not gloom.
That's true, but I still nearly made a dent in the ceiling when I entered that Fire Station in Camp Searchlight...

I like it, despite all its flaws and its limited size; in my opinion its immersive, challenging, and most of all fun. if you can look past the god-awful loading times and linearity at the beginning its a step up from FO3, and for the record FO3 was the reason I ended up buying an Xbox, played it at a friends house and decided "dude I want more Wasteland" so went out and made the purchase. But like everything that isn't perfect there are let-downs, three of which I can think of. 1.) The Freeside map design/the fast travel system to some places makes me wonder wtf Bethesda was thinking, my greatest peeve was that you fast travel to the Crimson Caravan outside the fucking camp and then have to load to get in..-_-..2.)The quests sometimes depend on skills to advance (speech, barter, medicine etc...) now Im fine with that as long as there are options to complete them by just punching or shooting things without pissing off people in game, unless that's the whole point (ie convincing Cass to sell her business, w/o the skills it cannot be completed) maybe its just me, but either the quests shouldn't be startable without the certain skills or a "just complete the damned quest" option should be included. 3.) Last, some enemies are ridiculously powerful, yeah the Cazadore complaint again but more then just that, the scorpions hunt in packs at times and are too close to starting area to avoid, as well as the Deathclaws...so yeah, the shoe-horning the game into either going with the Powder Gangers or the NCR right at the beginning just to jumpstart the story kinda pissed me off. Unlike Megaton where really the only thing you HAVE to do is either help Moriarty, pay him off, or steal his password to get the info to go to GNR...thats its, one quest or action and you're on your way, you dont have to save the town or nuke it at all if you wish, sure gets you a safehouse but really so what? Its like the game wants you to htfu and go explore where FNV wants to present itself and explain the situation like you're a retard, which frankly what more should you need? You had a package, you got your brains blown out but popped a stimpack and you're aok, go find asshole that shot you..... Overall FNV is fun and I really like it but still even I expected some better fine tuning from Bethesda

Fort Constantine,
Fort Bannister,
Our Lady of Hope Hospital,
Statesman Hotel,
Anchorage Memorial,
Arlington Library,
Vault-Tec HQ,
Little Lamplight,
Bethesda Ruins,
LOB Industries,
Cliffside Caverns,
Hubris Comics,
Roosevelt Academy,
Chryslus Building
Capital Building,

...all of which were huge, multi-levelled areas.

I thought the deathclaw mother was terrifying.
Did you meet the Legendary Deathclaw? He was even scarier.
The instant I read this I had to check it out. Twenty reloads and ten pairs of pants later I revise my statement. The mother deathclaw is a cute little bunny rabbit who gives out free hugs and chocolate compared to the legendary. Although now I have a bitchin' new weapon.

Did you notice it's a tribute to a weapon from Fallout 3? I thought that was pretty neat :)
