in every JRPG I always like to keep at least one of every item unless its one of those 1 time use only
In just about every other game that lets me I like to keep one of every weapon or armor even if its upgradable, like in Skyward Sword I fully upgraded my shield but then I bought extra shields to keep at the lower levels, I never used them they just sat at the vault but I'm OCD like that :p

I played a City Elf in Dragon Age: Origins and I always kept that wedding ring. It just seemed like something that a person in that situation would do. A token of home and a little reminder that humans are arseholes that should be back-stabbed and gutted at the first opportunity.

In Dragon Age 2 I hung on to Aveline's shield, the one that belonged to her dead husband. It seemed a bit cold to sell her last reminder of her husband because its numbers weren't big enough. This was especially satisfying because waaay later in the game she actually acknowledged it in dialogue.
She mentions it if you see it as well. Has a go at you either way, if I remember right.

To be honest, I never really concerned myself with loot and stuff. To me, it's just "shit to sell".

I do like the names of the stuff in FarCry 3 though. It's generally good fun to see what they came up with.

EDIT: Oooh, wait, I've got one!
In Dark Souls, a generally spr srs game filled with srs bsns you can pick up one item which is literally just "Rubbish". The description? "Rubbish with no value.
Who in their right mind would bother carrying this around? Perhaps you need help."

That was funny when I first found it.
Actually the Rubbish can be traded at the invisible bird girl. You get some crafting material or another for it. So, it is worth running back to her once you unlock the first smith (you find it pretty early in the game, right at the start of the Burg if memory serves).

Autographed Picture of Foror & Tigule [http://www.wowhead.com/item=18228]? check
Pet Rock [http://www.wowhead.com/item=20030]? check
Yellow Brewfest Stein [http://www.wowhead.com/item=32912]? check

And my god is WoW filled to the brim with these kinds of things.

Even though I haven't played World of Warcraft for some time now, the rogue that I've played on and off since 2006 still has his original, authentic and signed certificate of thievery!
I generally do not like using memetic pictures, but...

It's one of the things I kept myself. And a lot of books, too. Dr. Weavil's Diary comes to mind.

Rogues for life, yo! *brofist*

Ever miss the rogue mechanics from those old days? I don't really miss only having 60 charges on an appliance of poison, but there was something about making my own poison that felt kinda fun!

YEah, I know. You find Snuggly by going back to the Asylum anyway. The in game description was just funny.

In Fallout 3, one day I was inventory clearing and dropped a teddy I had accidentally aquired and it landed on my bed like it was laying there. I decided to keep it there and when I got another, lay it next to it so my Megaton bed had 2 bears on it. From then on I made it my mission to collect every teddy bear I could find and dump them on my bed. I wish I had a screenshot as ALL you could see is a mountain of bears.

One of my other houses had a bath full of pre-war money and alcohol bottles...I don't really know why I collected all that crap, went ad got MORE and then DID something with it all.

In the first Neverwinter Nights expansion, near the beginning of the game, I stole a woman's baby because I thought it might be useful for something. When I carried the character over to the third expansion I figured I might as well keep it because I'd carried it that long.

Much later in the game there's a machine you can feed the baby to and it gives you stuff. The baby giggles on his way down the chute, which is kinda funny.

Oh, and teddy bears.

Oh, and Nuka Cola trucks.

Oh, and plungers.
Yeah but they can't be just any old garden gnome. They have to be the undamaged ones which are even more rare and difficult to find.

I also did any musical instruments but that's just a personal quirk i think.

The only thing I collect is guns and money. I make a point of trying to break the money counter within a game, by selling a lot of stuff and never spending anything. In Borderlands I horde every cool gun I find (doesn't matter if its good) or any gun I used for a long time. As you can imagine my vault is nearly full. I don't think I am alone in either of those quirks

I collected every plunger I could find.

Kept my Rock-It-Launcher fully loaded with 'em.

Plunger Gun became my favorite weapon and most prized possession.

I don't tend to hold onto much, but I have any fear that something may be useful at some point later in the game, I will hold onto it as long as possible. I do also occasionally hold onto certain items of note if there is some sort of connection to my character (for example, and like others here, I will often keep starting sets of armour in storage just because).

In Skyrim I had a thing for books. At first it was just to read them, to take the time to appreciate that little tidbit some writer had placed for my entertainment. Then it grew to something more, it had become an unhealthy obsession. No longer was I concerned with the quest of the dragonborn. I had this insatiable drive to obtain every book ever made, stealing them at times if necessary. I never did find the lusty argonian maid though. :p

Oh yea and Wuuthrad hung proudly from my wall for a long time. I think at some point I did place it back on the statue however.

Hehe, I had one teddy bear on my characters bed. As for the garden gnome, I agree with another poster, it had to be the undamaged one only.

..and toasters. Those were kind of rare. :3

edit: In Final Fantasy IV I had this OCD thing about stripping off gear from characters that would leave the party soon. By the end of the game I had collected this huge pile of weapons and armor that no one could really use anymore. :p
