My rig including Monitor, mouce, keyboard and last month's new 1GB of RAM cost about $1,020 and including mandatory uprades to system and graphics card (not including crashes or AntiViral programs) a total of maybe 7 hours since I got it in March last year. I'm thinking about renaming it "Ol' Reliable".
I would divide my computer's use by hourage into
[li]24% Internet Various Surfin'[/li]
[li]35%Gaming[/li]
[li]33%Animation & Media Work[/li]
[li]11%Probably Something along the lines of 'Looking around inside my own files, Youtube and 'Nothing, just rendering"[/li]

how right you are. I never built a computer, and knew jack shit about it, but i wanted to build my own, and save my parents a couple hundred dollars. I just did a bit of research, asked questions, went to some of my friends who built their own computers, and i was ready to go. Got all the parts, plug stuff in, and i was done.
Not as hard as I thought it would be.
I've got a rig that can max out crysis on 1280 and it cost me $1100 so I don't think seven hundred quid is far off the mark.
where can i get such a rig.

i'm looking into a alienware notebook. tell me if it's worth it if not tell what gaming notebook is 'teh l337est'. i'm open to desktops too.

Put simply. It isn't.

I'm currently using my brand new rig of 6 months. My old faithful Bertha died after 6 years...Damn good machine, Last stuff I stuck in it was an ATI 1950xt AGP with an AMD 3200...I loved that baby to death.

My current rig is a Wolfdale 3.0ghz with an 8800gts (g92). Running XP/Vista Dual boot along with twin WD Raptors running in Raid 0.

That thing can put any console games graphics to fucking shame.

99% of this board has absolutely no idea what I just said.
i do have no idea

edit: where can i get one?

it's thought that pc games are more sophisticated than consoles.

it's a opinion question just based upon prefference. There's no real difference unless you like rts's then pc is usually better.

Don't double post, there's an edit button for a reason.

A desktop will always be better value for money than a laptop. Always.

what rig should i get
Custom building a desktop is the best way to get the most bang for your buck. Then upgrade to a LCD 20"in Moniter later on. Also remember if you get more then one hard drive and anything more powerful then a 7800 NVIDIA(I think.) then you will need to probably upgrade the powersupply to 500watts since 420 won't cut it.

I'm not PC saavy, so is it cheaper to buy a pre-made computer(with or without individual's customization) or would I be better off learning how to build a rig from individual parts?

Depends what you're building. Gaming machine or porn trawler?

Also. Don't just ask people what you should build. You'll end up with a fuck load of boxes and no idea what to do with them. Look around. Do some research. Look up some comparisons. I'm pretty sure there's some sites out there which compare the latest graphics cards to toasters, robots, even my balls (none have come close in terms of resolution)

I'm just asking since you seem to know what you're talking about(i sound like a circuit city customer) should I bother learning how to build a PC, for games, or just start looking at vigor, alienware, etc.

Depends how rich you are. If you're willing to spend ridiculous amounts of cash you can get a decent pc from alienware that looks fairly nice. But you can do the same yourself for a lot less.

I've just recently gotten into PC gaming. And maybe it's my fault for being so damn poor, but not a lot of games work on mine eventhough they came out like 3 years ago. A great example is Counter Strike: Source I made the stupid mistake most people do of not checking first before I buy but I buy it get home and it doesn't fucking work. I bought my computer two years ago and CS:S came out 4 years ago. What the fuck?

And for the record I have a eMachines t3418, becuase, like I stated before, I'm poor.

Looked up the stats for your pc. Know why counter strike doesn't work? Because your graphics card looks like this [http://www.ixbt.com/mainboard/images/nvidia-geforce-6100-6150/nvidia-geforce6100-nforce405.jpg] Go out and buy yourself a pci-e graphics card. Won't cost you more than 50 bucks and you'll be able to run counter strike.

Is the AA in the PC or Game?

Either way, even some footage of Crysis looked weird to me, but that's just what I saw.
One of the best things about PC's. Is that modern cards let you force AA on all kinds of 3d games (mostly) which makes your older games look super crisp and awesome. If the ps3 could do that for ps2 games rather than making the jaggies worse, I'd build the fucking thing it's own throne in front of my TV.
Oh god yes, when I play PS2 games on my PS3 they look so jagged and weird. I always thought that it was because I was used to 1080p resolution and that previous graphics looked like crap now (though that's part of it). Well, there's also the fact that i've never played a PS2 game on an HD TV (my previous TV was really old, sometimes it couldn't even fit the whole screen on it). There is a certain option, i forgot what it is exactly, but it's suposed to do something to the Ps2 games and I think it has something to do with AA.

My first LCD was like 15 inches wide and it made my ps2 games unplayable. My 67inch HDTV makes them fucking torturous.

There is a 'smoothing' option in the ps3 menu but I'll be honest, it's bullshit. It makes it so the games look only slightly worse than they would on a ps2. Viva la emulation.

Ah, that's what it was called. I couldn't tell the difference between it being on and off so I just roll with it.

But yeah, playing Guitar Hero on my new LCD/Plasma (whichever one is the best for gaming) was a torturous, if not rockin', experience.
