That us people who live in Hawaii all live in grass shacks on the beach, don't wear clothes, and have no electricity. We're civilized like you people in the mainland, dumbasses...

And yes, I've actually had someone ask me that before.

But... why wouldn't you?
Not permanently, obviously, but living like that for a few weeks at a time sounds pretty awesome, given the fact that your climate is nothing short of awesome. Unlike the climate here where we get FOUR SODDING MONTHS OF WINTER with a crapload of snow, and temperatures that range from a mild -2C or so to -30C.

ha I know your pain, some people seem to think everyone in Texas is a cowboy, ride horses around and have six shooters on our hips and ten gallon hats.

"Alot"

Sorry, but it really irritates me when I see it, especially if it's being written by someone who speaks English as their first language and is in secondary school.

that all british people are incredibly upper class and only drink tea and eat scones.
Aw, man. I've been doing my British accent all wrong then.

OP: That you can wake up from being unconscious due to a whack on the head for an hour and be totally fine. If you're hit on the head and pass out, that means you got a horrbily bad concussion. If you don't wake up within 10-15 seconds (I believe) you get permanent brain damage.
And I see it in stories all the time! Come on, people, do some research.

That being thoughtful makes you a braggart or elitist, or that showing your intelligence or knowledge is akin to condescension. People used to hate me in grade school and middle school because I'd tell them what kind of scores I got when they asked, not that they seemed to be very interested in doing any better. I certainly never turned anyone down for help and would keep working with them until they understood. Now, I can't engage in my favorite topic, politics, because people either take it way too seriously, roll their eyes at you as though the very idea of talking about what our government or society should work towards is not an acceptable topic of discussion, or get offended because you try to probe their opinions and treat topics with significant depth. The contempt and apathy that people show for discussing public policy never ceases to amaze and infuriate me.

That Einstein was rubbish at maths. He wasn't. In fact he excelled at maths, along with other subjects.
That creationism is a viable alternative to evolution (in the US anyway, and even though I don't live there, that amount of stupidity just makes me sad).
That good and evil are real, and not something we've made up, that they're inherently there, whether we are or not. They're both meaningless terms and their definitions vary from person to person, from generation to generation and from culture to culture. NOTHING is inherently good and NOTHING is inherently bad.
That YOUR KID is the most speshul kid in the world, the smartest, coolest, most unique, et cetera. He or she IS NOT, it's just yet another stupid little kid, nothing more, nothing less, the only thing to differentiate it from others of it's kind is it's genetic relation to you which makes you THINK he or she is totally awesome, et cetera. So shut up about your kid already, he or she is nothing special.
Which brings me to this one - the misconception that humans AREN'T idiotic in general. That everyone is somehow unique. Noones truly unique(save for DNA, obviously), not you, not me, not anyone. Every thought you've ever had, someone has had before you. Every. Single. One.

There are more obviously, but since it's 6:47 am and I just got through watching a film called Braindead(which is absolutely AWESOME, and completely INSANE), I can't think of anything else at this precise moment.
You kind of turned into a jerk near the end there buddy

OP (sort of): That nobody's unique or everybody is a moron. This may seem stupid but think back... we all know THAT GUY

-People that say that global warming is a 'debated' theory. 97% of scientists agree of it's existance, the ones that do not are mostly 'petrol engineers' or work in the oil field. That's not a coincidence. Sure, global warming is still a theory, then again, so is GRAVITY.
-Thinking that being born in a certain country automatically makes you better than those who were not.
-Think that televised media programmes are credible sources.
-Thinking that Muslim extremists are more of a threat than Christian extremists.
-Thinking that anyone who disagrees with you on any given topic is immediately less intelligent than you are.

The only misconception I hate is well known: Games make people violent. Games don't make you violent... just like most other media, it can only desensitize you to violence. People only get violent when specific buttons are pressed... unfortunately, the 'being told what to do' button seems to be pressed and thus linked to games.

People who keep saying that evolution is "only a theory". Look, I'm a Christian, and I think it's time we stop kidding ourselves. Evolution is a "theory" in the same sense that gravity is one.

That nuclear power is horrifically dangerous. Erm, excuse me? Coal ash deaths usually rank about 30,000 a year. Nuclear deaths go to about 20.
That humans lose 90% of their heat through their heads. No, more like 15%. The study that said 90% was done by immersing people in freezing water, and measuring heat loss. Well, the brain has to keep running, so of course it's going to lose a hell of a lot of heat. Across the rest of the body, blood flows change to keep your internal organs as warm as possibly.

That somehow opinions can be "misconceptions".

Why do these threads bring out the meta in me?

The classic "couldn't care less" misconception I hold very dear to me.
I have also been amused by the whole "ten items or less" misconception. Should say "ten items of fewer" in case you didn't know.
The worst one has to be the "Flat Earth" myth. Yeah, the only people that thought the earth was flat during the Middle Ages were crazy. I even wrote a paper on it for a college class (not that that makes me an expert). See 'Lactantius' of the fourth century A.D. for the first documented belief in a flat earth.

How everybody think us canadians are meek and apologetic people! GOD HOW I HATE THAT!

...

Well I am sure not everyone thinks that... but the majority at least. But hell I could be wrong and only half of everyone. Or a quarter. or maybe a tenth.. And if that is the case... I'm sorry... [sub]Don't hate me...[sub] I'm sorry...[/sub][/sub]

I got one now: the misconception that calling something an "opinion" makes it one. Some things are facts you can just be wrong about.
