Misquotes you hate

Everyone seems to have a favourite quote, and sometimes it seems like everyone loves some quotes, but very few people actually understand what they are saying sometimes.

For example one of the most common misquotes I've heard is It is better to be feared than loved, however out of all the people I've heard use that quote I don't think I've ever met one that actually had a clue what it means, or what Machiavelli was actually saying. It's not "better" it's safer and ideally one wants to be both at the same time if at all possible.

It drives me to distraction every time I hear someone spew that quote without any concept of what they are actually talking about.

Got any you hate you want to share?

I'll be honest, I thought the title said mosquitoes, and I prepared a rant on how much I hate those little bastards.

"Elementary, my dear Watson." was never said in any of Arthur Doyle's work.

I'm sorry? What about misquotes?

OT: I hate it when creationists take quotes from scientists, take them out of context, and use them to further their agenda. Also, when the media jumped on Al Gore and took the quote about him "inventing the internet", which he never actually said.

"Never say never."

Moreso now that it's associated with a certain entity that I refuse to acknowledge.

In the name of fuck, that. I grind my teeth and go on a nerd rampage upon hearing that.

I've heard people say that Jesus believed in "an eye for an eye." OK, technically he did say this (in Aramaic, not English). But the full quote is:
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
I'm not a Christian, but it really bugs me when Christians can't quote their own Christ properly.

Yeah, that too. Like in Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, where Richard Dawkins said in an interview it's more likely life on Earth has alien rather than divine origin. "RICHARD DAWKINS BELIEVES IN SPACE ALIENS!"

Also, when the media jumped on Al Gore and took the quote about him "inventing the internet", which he never actually said.
He said, "I took the initiative in creating the internet", which is really easy to misquote. Out of context, it sounds like he claims to have invented the Web, when he means that he used his political power to support it.

Nowadays, politicians are more savvy, but they still get quoted out of context. I've seen incriminating quotes from both Obama and McCain that were, in fact, prefaced with a warning not to take them out of context.

Every single fucking quote that appears on the Total War games. They're always misquoted, credited to the wrong person, or just plain stupid.

I swear I've seen the same quotes attributed to different people depending on which Total War game I'm playing. :l

All of them, ever. I hate quotes. I try to avoid them because it makes you sound dumb and unoriginal. And most people get them wrong anyhow.

Your lucky you live in the North. Down in the south, it just sucks ass with these mosquitoes.
There's a band between the Canadian shield and the Florida panhandle where no one has the right to complain about mosquitoes. Have you ever been to Peace River, or worse, Yellowknife? The mosquitoes there appear in swarms so large I've seen trucks clog their engines with 'em. Down in Guatemala or Brazil, they carry lots of deadly diseases.

No, 'Love of money is the root of all evil'. There's a surprisingly big difference.
Oh god I agree so much.

Ugh, they really need to "fix" whoever they force to tack quotes on the game.

Worst of all is when TW games can't work out who made the quote, so they invent a random name.

Another thing i hate: Ben Franklin quotes ending with the epitaph "President of the United States". Guuuuuuhhhh...

"Hello, Clairice." This line is not said in any of the Hannibal movies and everybody still says it. I don't like it. At one point Anthony Hopkins says, "Good evening, Clairice.", but that is different, isn't it?

Surprised not to see this, but.

It's not "No, Luke...I am your father." it's "No...I am your father!!!"

Yeah, it's a petty gripe, but everybody seems to get it wrong...

Oh, and Lennon's "The Beatles are bigger than Jesus" quote. Totally out of context. Not that I wouldn't have put it past him to have said that...
